Officer Jim Hopper has a lot to deal with in Netflix’s Stranger Things Season 2. According to David Harbour, the local town police cop will have to cover-up the events of the previous season and deal with whatever horrors are coming in the upcoming season.
The Secret Hero
Stranger Things is a love letter to ’80s sci-fi and horror movies, but Officer Hopper deviated from stereotypes and became the hero of his little town of Hawkins, Indiana. He went from battling alcoholism to entering the Upside Down with Joyce (Winona Ryder) to save Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). So, in Season 2, the small town cop will reemerge more confident and more fearless than ever.
In the finale, Hopper cooperated with Dr. Martin Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) contemporaries to help cover up Will’s near-death experience and Barb’s (Shannon Purser) unsolved disappearance. He was seen hopping into a car with the people from Hawkins lab months after Will was rescued.
“There’s a bit of a cover-up kind of going on that Hopper is head of,” he explained in an interview with Uproxx. “We don’t need people to know about the interdimensional monster that was running around town.”
He also assured that Barb, Nancy’s (Natalia Dyer) friend who perished and was killed in the Upside Down will have the justice that fans have been asking since series aired on Netflix last year. “He’s also got the Barb thing. Barb was never found, so that’s addressed,” he teased.
Moreover, it looks like he will also have to deal with the reemergence of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). In the first season finale, he was seen leaving food (not just any food, but Eggo waffles) in the Mirkwood area which hints that he knows about her and her whereabouts.
“And then he’s got this reemergence of Eleven, which he knows something about at the end of last season,” he shared. “And then he’s got this reemergence of Eleven, which he knows something about at the end of last season.”
Will he save Eleven, or will he turn her over to Hawkins Lab? It is hard to predict Officer Hopper’s actions in Stranger Things Season 2. As Harbour stated, “[he] is sort of pulled in a lot of different directions.” He is also colluding with Brenner’s people who were the villains of Season 1 in order to protect Joyce, Will and himself.
Mysteries Of Hopper’s Past
However, Hopper is also keeping a few secrets of his own. Aside from a few glimpses of his past, not much is known about his character.
The previous season already hinted about his sad past. Through flashbacks, Hopper remembered his own daughter who, like Eleven, had a shaved head. But, instead of a research facility, Hopper’s young daughter was strapped in on a hospital bed and breathing through an oxygen tube.
Upon first viewing, viewers have assumed that the child died from cancer, but Harbour might have teased that something else happened. In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) ten months ago, fans asked the actor about Hopper’s life before any of the chaos of the Upside Down bled through to Hawkins.
“Yes,” he answered when his fans asked him if he knew what happened to Hopper’s daughter, “but its a secret we may explore in S2, so don’t wanna say right now.”
This led to speculations that the child did not die of cancer (or might not even be dead at all), but was another test subject like Eleven. Some even think that Eleven was his daughter all along. Unfortunately, fans still have to wait a few months to get some answers. Stranger Things Season 2 is expected to be released on Netflix on Halloween, Oct. 31 (Tuesday).
