Clint Dempsey announced he wants to play Champions League soccer. That announcement has now cast doubt over his future at Fulham. Dempsey, 29, had an excellent scoring season this past year with Fulham. Dempsey scored 17 goals to help his club to finish in ninth place in the English Premier League.
Because of his fine play, speculation started about his possible departure from Craven Cottage amid rumors that Liverpool and Arsenal of the English Premier League were interested in his services. Dempsey also has said that he honestly would have a hard time turning down an offer to switch to a side that was competing in the top competition in Europe, should one of those teams approach him during the summer break.
Fulham have offered the American striker a new contract during the season, but he said he wanted to focus on soccer and finish the season strong.
He said, “I have been up front saying how grateful I am for all that Fulham has done for me and some of my best memories of soccer are here at Craven Cottage. However, the fact is I want to play Champions League soccer, giving me a shot to play at the highest level of soccer in the world.”
He said it was something he had never experienced and he wants to before he retires from playing. He also stated that he always is looking to challenge himself. If not, he said he would have just spent his entire career in the MLS because he would have been nearer to his friends and family.
