Helmsman of the second highest grossing film of this year to date, James Gunn reveals how the identity of Star Lord’s father will not be presented as a mystery in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel. Read on to know more about this scoop.
In the middle of this year, James Gunn released his Marvel film “Guardians of the Galaxy,” hoping for a positive response from fans of both comic book readers and avid moviegoers alike. However, he got more than what he wished for. Turns out, “Guardians of the Galaxy” outdone itself even on the Worldwide Box Office standing that it even surpassed the star-spangled sequel “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as it moved to the second spot with its $ 770,104,000 profit. With a success like that, it comes to no wonder that helmsman James Gunn is now in deep concentration in coming up with a compelling plot for the films sequel. “Guardians of the Galaxy” was hailed by critics and fans with the way it profusely wove together the film’s cinematic elements technically and emotionally. Gunn is now in the process of completing the sequel’s storyline, and he reveals how Star Lord’s father will be very much different from the comic book context and how big his role will be in the coming film.
In Screen Rant’s feature, Gunn had a conversation with IGN regarding the involvement of Star Lord’s dad in the film sequel during the promotion of the home video release of “Guardians of the Galaxy” (to be released on Dec. 9, 2014). The enthusiastic director revealed without much adieu that he won’t be putting the focus of the film on the identity of Peter Quill’s father. Instead, he will be highlighting the progression of the father-son relationship.
“It’s funny, I don’t want to blackbox it too much. You know what I mean? Yeah, it’s like, we’ll find out who is dad is, and it’s going to serve the story. It’s not going to be something like in the Crying Game, though, where the big thing was, ‘He has a penis!’ [or The Sixth Sense’s big twist]. I don’t want to do that. It’s not about the revelation of who it is; it’s about what his relationship is to that character,” shared Gunn.
Even more than so, Gunn is set on creating another "Guardians" material that will deviate from the comics. He even casually expressed his disinterest over Star-Lord’s father.
“I just thought there was a more interesting way to go for the cinematic universe that was more believable. There’s things in the comic that on film were a little too Star Wars for me. And I’m not a big fan of the name J’son,” continued the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director.
“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will open in theaters on May 5, 2017.
