One thing that Whovians look forward to annually is the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special, as each year’s episode is always unique. However, this year’s will be even more magical as this will be the first time that Alex Kingston’s Dr. River Song will be meeting the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi). Also, Capaldi, in a recent interview, took some time to reflect on his tenure as the Doctor, and as to his future on the show. WARNING: This article will contain spoilers for “Doctor Who” and the upcoming Christmas Special, “The Husbands of River Song.”
Ever since the series got rebooted in 2005, Whovians have looked forward to a “Doctor Who” Christmas Special. It started with “The Christmas Invasion,” the first episode to feature David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
Since then, each Christmas Special has been different and unique in their own little way.
However, this year’s Christmas Special is one that most Whovians are looking forward to, as “The Husbands of River Song” will show Dr. River Song (Alex Kingston) meeting the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) for the first time.
River is an important character in the mythology of the rebooted series, particularly during the tenure of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor.
River, or Melody Pond, is the Doctor’s wife, the daughter of former companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, and was brainwashed to kill the Doctor at the appointed time.
She is also a time-traveller, and they often meet at different stages of his life. For example, the first time he first met her, it was during the Tenth Doctor’s (David Tennant) time, and it was the day that she died.
However, based on the promotional videos on Spoiler TV, and according to Benji Wilson of The Telegraph, it seems that she will not be able to recognize the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) at first, since the last time she met him was during Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor’s time.
The promotional videos show that the Doctor will be helping River who is on the run from a king and his robot bodyguard.
It also shows them hurling a robotic head around, threatening to throw it into a garbage chute, and the Doctor laughing at the fact that the head, in a bag, was threatening them.
Capaldi, in his interview with The Telegraph’s Wilson, describes the special as “festive,” which is a very welcome thing, given the fact that the last two episodes were very emotional and heavy.
He also talked about his tenure as the Twelfth Doctor and mentioned that the role is quite demanding physically. However, he believes that the Doctor being older than before as he believes that every incarnation should be different from the other.
However, given the fact that he has been in this role for two years now, he also mentioned that he is not yet sure about signing on for a fourth year, as he is signed on to the series for another and third year.
Just like the other incarnations, The Doctor said that he would feel sad when it’s his time to leave, but at the same time, leaving the role will allow him to take on more opportunities as an actor. After all, both Tennant and Smith were on the show for three seasons, and several specials.
