Joe Manganiello has finally given an update about his Dungeons & Dragons movie. While doing press rounds to promote Smurf: The Lost Village, the actor talked about his next project and explained how they can make it the best adaptation of the popular game yet.

Doing It Right

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has been around since 1974 and, after almost 5o years, there have been a few attempts to adapt fantasy-action-adventure to the screen. There was a cartoon series in the 1980s and a poorly-received adaptation in 2000.

Manganiello wants to bring the role-playing game back to the big screen in the near future and he seems to have a good plan. While talking to Josh Horowitz in the MTV podcast titled Happy Sad Confused, the 40-year-old talked about his adaptation of D&D.

While the project is far from official, Manganiello revealed that he has co-written the draft of the movie with a friend from Carnegie Mellon. The actor is a huge fan of the games, but he revealed that he also consulted with fellow players.

Apparently, he met with D&D content creators Wizards of the Coast to what the movie should look like and where it should go. The meeting proved helpful because, based on Manganiello’s description of the draft, the proposed movie has the potential to be the best adaptation of the game yet.

“Obviously, there’s a spectacle. There’s dragons breathing fire and lightning,” he stated. “But what makes a great superhero or fantasy movie is the human aspect.”

He pointed out that the reason why stories like Game of Thrones and Fellowship of the Ring are so beloved by many is because of the characters. While the worlds created by George R.R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien respectfully are quite interesting, the audience sticks around because they root for the characters. He pointed out that Fellowship of the Ring was about “undying love” of friends. “That’s something everyone can identify with,” he says.

This is where some adaptations, whether games or anime, fail to deliver. Manganiello added that a movie that is about something that is very human is something people want to see. The dragons are just a welcome bonus.

Going With Autumn Twilight

On a tweet, Manganiello revealed the source material for his planned new movie. The photo attached states that the script written by Manganiello and John Cassel is based on the novel titled Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The book was written by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman and was the first Dragonlance novel.

Published in 1984, Dragons of the Autumn Twilight is about the meeting of the Companions and The War of the Lance. It was followed by two other novels: Dragons of Winter Night and Dragons of Spring Dawning. Together, they make up the Chronicles trilogy that is regarded as the core novels of the Dragonlance world.

Right now, the project remains in its early stages, but Manganiello is “talking to the right parties” in order to make the proposed Dungeons & Dragons movie a reality. There is still not timeline for production nor a release date window.

But fans of the game can be assured that the material is handled by someone who is very knowledgeable of the world. Here he is playing Dungeons & Dragons with Nerdist.

Manganiello in DCEU

Meanwhile, the actor still has to impress as Slade Wilson, also known as Deathstroke, in the DC Extended Universe. Recently, he had lunch with comic book creator Marv Wolfman.

The co-creator of Deathstroke has nothing but good thing to say about the Manganiello. Wolfman assured that the actor is “the Slade Wilson the movies need and the Deathstroke great movies deserve.”

After a great lunch with Joe Manganiello, I feel more confident than ever that we got both the Slade Wilson the movies need and the Deathstroke great movies deserve.

This is the first update of the movie since Ben Affleck stepped down as the director of The Batman. The movie will not start filming until sometime in 2018 and the script is currently being written from the ground up, according to reports. So far, the superhero will star Affleck as Bruce Wayne, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth and Manganiello as Slade Wilson.

The Batman is expected to be released in 2019.
