Dwayne Johnson Confirmed For Disney’s ‘Moana’

Dwayne Johnson will lend his voice to the character, Maui, for Disney’s next big animated musical, "Moana." Read on for more details on this story.

Actor Dwayne Johnson has confirmed his role after announcing the role on Twitter. Johnson is set to play the demi-god Maui in the South Pacific-inspired adventure pic. Maui is a character from Hawaiian folklore, who raise island and tied down the sun.

"Moana" is Disney’s newest female-lead South Pacific adventure set in the ancient Oceania continent.  It follows the adventures of a protagonist named Moana Waialiki, a sea-voyaging enthusiast, the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. During her journey to the fabled island, she sought the help of Maui, the legendary demi-god. Together, they will take on "action-packed voyage in which they encounter enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds, and ancient folklore."

Disney veterans Ron Clements and John Musker, who have worked on previous Disney titles such as “Aladdin,” The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Frog,” will be re-teaming up to direct the pic. “Moana” will be Clements and Musker's first computer-animated film.

Musker describes the pic heroine as “is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself – She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Disney’s last animation pic "Frozen” was so successful it became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, as well as the highest-grossing film of 2013 and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, grossing nearly $1.3 billion in worldwide box office revenue, gaining strongly positive critical response and winning several accolades. It seems Disney has opted to feature strong female leads, such as the case with Frozen’s Elsa and Anna, hoping that Moana might ride the same successes Frozen had with its female leads. Moana is ready to set out on to the big screens on 2016.

That’s it for our latest scoop on Disney’s upcoming animated pic, "Moana." For more updates on celebrities, events, TV shows and upcoming movies, stay tuned here on Movie News Guide (MNG).
