Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are going to live and die over and over again in Edge of Tomorrow 2. In a new interview, director Doug Liman gave an update about his upcoming projects including the anticipated sequel to the 2014 sci-fi hit.
Third Major Character
Last year, Warner Bros. announced that after amassing $370.5 million at the global box office in 2014, Liman’s adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill will return to the big screen. Not much information is available about the upcoming sequel, but both Cruise and Blunt will reprise their roles as Major William “Bill” Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski.
In a new interview with MTV’s Happy Sad Confuse Podcast (via Collider), Liman revealed that a new character will be introduced in the new movie. Moreover, he or she will play an important part in the story.
“[T]here’s a third character in the sequel that’s gonna for sure steal the movie,” he teased. Liman did not give any details about the still unannounced new character. He did stress that whoever will join Cruise and Blunt will help avoid sequelitis.
He also shared that despite the box office success of the first movie, he refuses to go big in the sequel. “I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger,” he explained. “I’m like, ‘No, a sequel should be smaller.'”
He also pointed out that some of the things that fans enjoyed in the first movie are the comedy and the situation. So instead of bigger explosions and more bada** fight scenes, the follow-up will focus more on the characters of Cruise and Blunt.
“We can focus on that,” he added. “I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.”
Live Die Repeat Repeat
Liman revealed late last year that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is going to be a prequel. However, the filmmaker also recently divulged that the upcoming movie will be the last from the series.
He told the publication that he has always envisioned the series as a two-movie franchise. He said, “There’s the completion of the story we set up in the first movie and the relationships between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt—because, remember, at the end of the first movie, she doesn’t know who he is—and that’s gonna launch us into an amazing new direction.”
Moreover, Liman assured that the sequel will be as spectacular as the first one. For one, he said that the timeline will not be linear. Since the aliens screwed with time in the previous movie, fans will see Cruise and Blunt launched forward and backward.
“It does pick up right where we left off, but it doesn’t keep going forward,” he shared. “Because we’d screw with time, because the aliens screwed with time.”
As for the technology that allowed Cruise to live and die over and over again, it will still be used, but not in another war. The filmmaker revealed that the technology will be used in arena fights.
Since the movie is a prequel, Liman will explore certain aspects of the technology’s creation like batteries dying out or having a menu in a different language as aliens continue to ravage the planet.
“I’m creating an environment where I get to have even more of those details,” Liman shared.
After several title changes including All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow 2 finally settled with Live Die Repeat and Repeat. The title is of course based on the tagline of the first movie which describes the technology that allowed Cage and Rita to live and die over and over again.
As of this writing, the entire cast or the exact release date have not been announced.
