The 54-year-old double Oscar winner Emma Thompson has spoken candidly for the first time about her husband Kenneth Branagh’s affair with Helena Bonham Carter.
Miss Thompson was married to Branagh in 1989, just two years after they met while filming. But then disaster struck, and the liaison ended her marriage in 1995, one year after Kenneth is believed to have started an affair with Helena in 1994.
Emma ended up with Greg Wise, while Kenneth and Helena tried to make their relationship work for a few years, but they couldn’t. Helena left Kenneth and married Tim Burton, while Kenneth is also remarried to someone else like the other two patners did. That’s a brief story of this Uncool Bermuda Triangle of Helena Bonham Carter, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson.
Among the three, Emma remained the most successful; she married a great guy, Greg Wise, had a beautiful daughter, Gaia, and she’s still involved in amazing work. While on promotional rounds for Saving Mr. Banks, Emma spoke about her past and said:
“You can’t hold on to anything like that. It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.”
“I’ve had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer,” Miss Thompson said. “Being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged. Perhaps that’s why Ken loved us both. She’s a wonderful woman, Helena.” she added.
That’s really generous of Emma to think of that situation in that way. And that’s why I’m a big fan of Emma Thompson. Emma and Carter have starred together in two films, Howard’s End in 1992 and the Harry Potter series from 2007.
