Lucious Lyon (Terrence P. Howard) asked around for Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) as he was having a hard timing writing a new song for his concert, only to discover that she was out of town. He then learned that Malcolm Devaux (Luke Derek) was also out of town, answered Becky’s (Gabourey Sibide) questions regarding Hakeem Lyon’s (Bryshere Gray) party with Snoop Dog later that night, and blamed his inability to write a song on his double vision, which was strange, as that was not a symptom of ALS.
Meanwhile, Ryan Morgan (Eka Darville), who was supposed to be shooting footage at Hakeem’s party, was filming Jamal Lyon’s (Jussie Smollett) record signing at Leviticus, where he learned that he had become an inspiration to others to “come out of the closet”.
At the Berkshires, Malcolm and Cookie spent a passionate weekend together, but Cookie was worried about Jamal and Hakeem’s relationship with their father. Malcolm then told a surprised Cookie that Camilla Marks (Naomi Campbell) had not taken Lucious’ money at all.
At the party, Lucious was shocked that Billy Beretti (Judd Nelson) served him an injunction that stated that he couldn’t use any of his songs that was still owned by Beretti, who had his masters. Then, during the rap freestyle portion of the night, Hakeem insulted his father, only to be hit in the face by Lucious. The next day, Jamal tried to get Hakeem to go back to Empire, as he himself had forgiven Lucious for everything he had done to him, but Hakeem told him that he was going to sign with Creedmore.
Meanwhile, Andre Lyon (Trai Byers), found it impossible to go back to work, and found comfort and solace in Michelle White’s (Jennifer Hudson) church, where he became a deacon. Afterwards, his father tried to get him to still stay on as the Chief Financial Officer, but Andre refused, and told his father that God was now giving him a higher purpose.
After Lucious accidentally discovered from Porsha that Cookie was in the Berkshires, where Malcolm was, he decided to kick Cookie out of the company. Malcolm asked Cookie to come with him to Washington DC, but she refused to leave Empire behind.
Lucious then visited Jamal at Leviticus and told him that he had read in an article about him that Jamal was the “future of Empire”, and wondered if Jamal was willing to do anything for Empire. As he told Jamal that he had writer’s block, Jamal brought him to their old house in Philadelphia, where the two wrote a song together. In flashbacks, it was shown that Lucious had also killed a rival drug dealer before.
Afterwards, he told Jamal that in order for him to inherit Empire, he had to get his masters back from Berreti, which he did, much to Cookie’s dismay, by dangling Beretti over the ledge of his building while Hakeem, who had just signed with him, was having a passionate night with Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey). Lucious saw them together, but Anika continued on with Hakeem. Afterwards, the two didn’t seem very happy at what they had done.
Lucious also tried to get Cookie to do his concert again, but she was upset at him for making her sons go over the ledge.
The next day, Lucious visited Andre at church, as he wanted him to be with him at the ringing of the bell at the opening of the Stock Exchange the next week, but refused to do so. Lucious then proved to him that he was more powerful than God as Michelle agreed to do a Gospel record with him. Andre then sadly left the church.
Later that day, his doctor told him that he had been misdiagnosed and was not dying at all. That night, while he was hallucinating due to the sleeping pills he took, Cookie overheard him saying that he had killed Bunkie (Antoine McKay). Because of this, she decided to smother him to death with a pillow.
