Empire Recap: Who I Am

“Empire” Season 1 Episode 12 “Who I Am” aired on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 9:00 PM on Fox. In this episode, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), very much alive, made his decision, which succeeded in dividing his family into two, as Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Gray), Andre Lyon (Trai Byers), a scorned Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) and Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey) teamed up to bring Empire down. Meanwhile, Cookie is informed by the FBI that a case was being built against Lucious, and Vernon tries to get Andre back on board on Empire, which ended up in a disaster. Just as Lucious’ concert is well underway, another game changing twist threatened Empire in Andre’s, Cookie’s, Anika’s, and Hakeem’s favor.  Read on to learn more about this episode.

The season finale picked up from where the previous episode left off.

The next morning, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) told his family that he had been misdiagnosed, and gave each one of them gifts to apologize for everything that he had done. He gave Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) a set of wings to symbolize that he now had a jet of his own to go on tour anywhere, and gave Andre (Trai Byers) a golden cross with the lion of Judah, because he had turned Michelle White (Jeniffer Hudson) into an Empire artist. To Jamal (Jussie Smollett), he gave a golden scepter, which meant that he was to inherit Empire, and gave Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) a pillow, to signify the fact that she had almost killed him with one.

In the office, Becky (Gabourey Sibide) informed them that she had been promoted to the head of A&R, and Jamal told Hakeem that the smart move was to push his album two months back so that the news would talk about him rather than Jamal’s album, which was currently climbing the charts.

Cookie was then kicked out of Empire after Lucious revealed to Jamal that she had tried to kill him. Cookie then told Jamal that Lucious had killed Bunkie, and refused to talk to FBI Agent Carter (Nealla Gordon), who wanted her to give up Lucious, as they were building a case against him.

Meanwhile, Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey) planted the idea of a hostile takeover in Hakeem’s head, and told him to get Andre on their side. Later, at the press conference for the concert, Andre told Hakeem to just accept that Jamal had won, and sadly watched as Lucious told Michelle that she would be singing one of his songs at the concert. However, they were interrupted by Black Rambo, an Empire artist, who threatened to cut ties with them if Jamal ran Empire.

Later, at the board meeting, Andre’s advice to not drop Black Rambo was ignored, and because of this, decided to go over to Hakeem’s side, especially after Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) packed her bags and left him as she was upset at the fact that Andre hadn’t put up a fight against Jamal.

Later that night, Jamal faced off with Black Rambo at a rap battle, and sang him off to defeat.

Cookie, who agreed to help Hakeem get back Empire, met with Anika and Andre, which ended up with Andre and Hakeem pulling the two women apart as they had gotten into a catfight. Cookie then agreed to work with Anika, as she knew a man named Tony Tricter, whose grandson was a wannabe rap star, who wanted to buy into Creedmore. Together, they convinced him to take over Empire instead, and guaranteed them $500 Million, with them providing $250 Million to buy into the company. They then just needed a scandal to bring Lucious down, so that they could buy into it.

After Cookie confirmed that Lucious killed Bunkie with Vernon Turner (Malik Yoba), she told Jamal that the truth was up to the Lord and Lucious, and told him that she was always there for him.

The next day, Vernon tried to patch things up with Andre, but it ended up in a fight with Rhonda, who came back to Andre, killing Vernon in self defense. However, Rhonda told Andre not to call the police as she was pregnant.

The next day, Lucious rang the opening bell of the stock exchange, making his company public.

Backstage, during the concert, Lucious apologized to Jamal for everything that he had done, and told him that he had done it out of love. He then revealed that his real name was Dwight Walker, and before going onstage, was arrested by Carter for Bunkie’s murder. Becky then informed him that there was talk of a hostile takeover, as the stock was going down, and Jamal and Lucious believed that Cookie had ratted Lucious out, but in reality, Carter’s star witness, Vernon, was missing.

In flash forwards, it was seen that Cookie was back at the mansion; Anika was producing Hakeem’s album; Jamal was running Empire; and Rhonda and Andre looked at the ultrasound of their baby.

Meanwhile, Lucious, in jail, promised everyone that he would return.
