According to some recent results, it has become apparent that around 10.2 million people tuned in to watch the season 4 premier of the British period drama, Downton Abbey on PBS. To make things more clear, it’s about 3% of America’s population.
Americans have been sitting down to watch this show for around three and a half months ever since it was launched in Britain where it had 11.8 million viewers making 18.6% of Britain’s population making it Britain’s most watched drama.
It was expected to go big in the U.K but the fact that it gained so much popularity in U.S is surprising as popular dramas in America usually comprise of a male protagonist who is involved in weird or reprehensible things, some of them are, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire etc. However, Downton Abbey has a female heroine Mary Crawley. Not to mention the fact that Matthew Crawley, the show’s cute male lead, was killed off in season three—making the show even more female-centric than before.
