Fans have been left shocked and in dismay after last week’s episode of the British TV show, Downton Abbey. Now, American viewers have been left stunned after the violent rape episode which aired on Sunday.
During the scene, Mrs, Bates, played by Joanne Froggart, is confronted by Mr. Green, who attempts to kiss the married maid. However, things take an elevated turn as Mrs. Bates wrestles Green off of her. It is at this moment that Green punches her in the face knocking her to the ground.
‘I am still sick to my stomach over what happened to Anna. I hope that disgusting man gets whats coming to him,’ wrote Suzanna McGee.
‘Can someone please talk to me about Downton Abbey? Please. I’m in terrible shock,’ tweeted Sophie.
Show creator Julian Fellowes defended the storyline at the time, telling the BBC:
‘The whole point of the way we do things on Downton is we don’t do them gratuitously. We are interested in exploring the resultant emotions and the effect these things have on people.
‘If we’d have wanted a sensational rape we could have stayed down in the kitchen with the camera during the whole thing and wrung it out.”
