When Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was first released, there was a mention of Albus Dumbledore in it. It led to many believing that one of the most powerful and famous wizards will be re-entering the wizardry world.
Now, a recent update has confirmed that Sherlock Holmes star Jude Law will be portraying a young Dumbledore in the movie’s sequel which is due to begin production this year. Here is what the latest update has reported about Law’s casting.
Variety reported just a few hours back that the Sherlock Holmes star has been tapped on to play the role of Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel.
According to the outlet, his portrayal will be a younger version of the wizard and set in a time when he was a Professor of Transfiguration and not the headmaster at the school.
With the original cast including Eddie Redmayne all set to return for the sequel, it would be interesting to see what Law will bring to the table as Dumbledore.
The outlet also reported that David Yates, who is returning as the director of the movie, is ecstatic about the actor’s casting. He issued a statement and according to it, he believes Law is a phenomenal actor whose work he has admired.
He also believes that the actor will brilliantly capture all the facets of Dumbledore and that he cannot wait to work with him in the movie.
Warner Bros. echoed the same sentiment as the director. Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Pictures, stated that the studio is thrilled to have Law taking on the role of Dumbledore.
Also, since the actor has been a part of the Warner Bros. family for a long time, the studio is excited to start a new adventure with him.
While an official character description has not been issued, reports state that Law will be playing Dumbledore at a very different time period. He is being described as a contemporary of the villain Grindelwald played by Johnny Depp, which means fans can expect an encounter between both the characters.
Since Dumbledore was described in the first movie’s trailer as someone who is fond of Newt Scamander, chances are when Grindelwald goes after Newt, Dumbledore will be there to help him.
In the wizarding world, Dumbledore has been known more as a guardian who has helped the likes of Harry Potter when Lord Voldemort came after him to kill him.
Many might remember everything that an older Dumbledore did to keep Potter safe from the dark Lord. Keeping all of that in mind, the younger version of the wizard too might do everything in his power to safeguard Scamander from Grindelwald.
The outlet also mentioned that before Law was cast in the role, there were other actors who were being considered for it. Actors like Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Jared Harris were amongst the ones being considered.
Some time back, there were reports on how Harris would look in the role of a young Dumbledore considering his father Richard Harris played the role before his death in the first movie.
Author J.K. Rowling, who debuted as a screenwriter with the first movie, has written the script for the second one as well, which is essentially set in a time considered dark for the wizarding world.
According to what is known, Newt and friends will have to decide where their allegiance lies especially in a dark time like this. Maybe looking at the darker times, the makers decided to introduce a younger Dumbledore considering he is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and influential wizards ever.
Law’s look as Dumbledore has not released yet but in the coming months it would be seen if he sports the classic beard that the older Dumbledore did.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel will hit big screens next year, on Nov. 16.
