“Fast & Furious 8” is currently in development following the announcement and confirmation of Vin Diesel that the “Furious 7” sequel will be released on April 14, 2017. As the film is still two years away from its expected release date, various speculations and rumors have recently surfaced regarding the plot, and possible returning characters to the film franchise. However, another big concern facing the upcoming sequel is the fact that the eighth installment will be the first installment without Paul Walker.
Will “Furious 8” succeed even without Paul Walker? Will his brother, Cody star in the sequel as a completely different character? Read on to learn more about this story.
Paul Walker, who portrayed Brian O’Connor in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, tragically died in a car accident in 2013. “Fast & Furious 7” was Walker’s last film in the franchise and while his brother Cody successfully filled in for Paul in several scenes in the movie, countless fans are currently speculating whether the film franchise will still live on after “Fast & Furious 8.”
This is a big point of contention, as according to Movie Pilot, the seventh installment brought the film franchise at “its peak.”.
As of today, those confirmed to appear in “Fast 8” or “Furious 8” are Vin Diesel as Dominic “Dom” Toretto, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Luke Hobbs, Michell Rodriguez as Leticia “Letty” Ortiz Toretto, Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw.
With regards to the creative team, Cinemablend reported that director Justin Lin is currently in talks with Universal in order to direct a “multi-part finale”.
They also reported that it might be possible for Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody to return, especially because Diesel hinted before that he had been added to “Furious 7” as a spring board for the stories that they could tell in the eighth installment.
It was also hinted that Lucas Black, who currently stars in the CBS series “NCIS: New Orleans,” might return as Sean Boswell, as the actor has previously revealed that he has signed up for more “Furious” movies, specifically for the seventh, eighth and ninth installments.
According to We Got This Covered, a source very much involved with the development and production of the film has reported that Eva Mendes is currently in talks of returning as Agent Monica Fuentes, as the plot of the “Furious 8” directly and largely involves her.
