Fate of the Furious, also known as Fast & Furious 8, opens in theaters this Friday. As the release date draws closer, Vin Diesel reveals the dark character, Dom, he plays in the film. He also talks about remembering his late co-star Paul Walker on set.
Walker had played the character Brian O’Conner who is a former FBI agent turned criminal and professional street racer. He finally settles down with his lover, Mia, and their son, Jack. This was the last film where Walker made his appearance in the Fast & Furious film franchise.
He passed away in a single vehicle crash in 2013. At that time he had not completed the filming for the Furious 7. There were script rewrites which led to the delay in the release of the film. Fast & Furious 8 is going to be the first film without Walker’s appearance, and this makes Diesel sad to think about it as he still grieves the loss.
Vin Diesel Talks About Remembering Paul Walker
The bond between Dom Toretto and Brian O’Conner throughout the Fast & Furious franchise is memorable. The last scene of Furious 7 has revealed that both of them bade adieu and drive off in different directions at the crossroad. In this way, Brian’s story was wrapped up.
But Diesel still remembers his co-star and the screen space they have shared for last so many years. “Every day on the set, I thought of Paul; in every meeting, I would bring him up,” says Diesel as reported by USA Today.
Diesel did have difficulty dealing with his missing co-star. But in this tough time, co-star Dwayne Johnson helped him out. Just like family, Diesel says, Johnson backed him up when he broke down about Walker, as per the aforementioned source.
Vin Diesel Talks About His Dark Role
Diesel reprises his character Dominic in Fate of the Furious. He is seen enjoying a honeymoon with his wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) in Cuba. However, a major twist which shatters Letty takes place.
In the trailers released for the film, one can see Dom having an affair with Charlize Theron’s Cipher. She plays the criminal mastermind and is responsible for breaking up the family of Dom.
There is a reason why Diesel chose to play a dark character. He says, “I knew we had to go dark,” as per aforementioned source. He has revealed that some of the people involved with the film had their doubts on Dom going dark. But then his girlfriend Paloma Jimenez advised him that the world does not want to see Dom happy in this next chapter.
Director of Fate of the Furious, F. Gary Gray, also has the similar opinion. He says that this franchise of Fast & Furious is based on the theme of family. But now there is a change. This is a twist the fans and newcomers will appreciate, feels the director.
Diesel Talks About Future Fast & Furious Films
The actor feels that in one of the trailers of Fate of the Furious, a scene causes a stir among the fans. That scene is where Dom is seen kissing Cipher. He calls it as the “tsunami” of the first Fate & Furious 8 trailer.
As per the aforementioned source, Diesel calls the eighth franchise as the best movie ever. He says, “I want people to walk out of there with questions.” He continues, “The more questions, the greater the appetite is for the next chapter.”
Fast & Furious 9 is expected to come out in 2019 while Fast & Furious 10 might be released in 2021. Although there is a lot of time for them to release, Fast & Furious 8 will set the base for these future films.
Meanwhile, Fate of the Furious is set to open in the US on April 14. It has premiered in Berlin on April 04, 2017.
