Charlize Theron is the villain of the eighth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise titled Fate of the Furious. A few weeks before her new movie lands on the big screen, the Academy Award-winning actress revealed one thing she does not like about her character Cipher. Find out below.
Cipher’s Cool Ride
Fast & Furious is all about fast cars. The original movie that was released in 2001 introduced Dominic Torreto (Diesel), an ex-convict and a member of an elite street racing group. Eventually, it turned into a heist movie as the team becomes a professional criminal group but the fast cars never disappeared.
That is why Theron is a little upset about her villainous new character, Cipher. The big bad of the upcoming movie is a notorious cyber terrorist who managed to alienate Dom from his wife and friends and entice him back into the world of crime.
However, she does not drive one of those fast cars that the franchise is well-known for. During a press conference in China, the 41-year-old talked about Cipher and her experience filming one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
“Charlize was very upset when she found out that she wasn’t going to drive any cars,” the actress joked as reported by Just Jared. However, she admitted that her character compensated for her lack of fast cars with a cooler ride. “[B]ut Cipher, I think, was very excited to know that she was going to have her own bada** jet,” she added.
Theron is not the only one who joined the franchise expecting to be placed behind the wheels and race Diesel and Johnson. Helen Mirren also wanted to be part of Dom’s crew because she is a fan of cars!
Upon hearing this, Diesel, who is also a producer of the movie, immediately signed her up. Mirren will play the role of Owen Shaw’s (Luke Evans) mother.
It is Not All Fun and Games
Theron also talked about the challenge of joining the franchise. As a versatile actress who has starred in action movies such as Mad Max: Fury Road and, more recently, Atomic Blonde, the award-winning actress knows a thing or two about action scenes.
However, she admitted that the most difficult part of filming Fate of the Furious is actually staying safe. Over the years, the franchise has challenged its crew into doing gravity-defying stunts and the eighth movie is no different. The trailer already saw cars toppling over, cars getting hit by a wrecking ball, cars pursued by military tanks and cars on fire.
Theron on Her Fate of the Furious Character
In China, the actress also took the opportunity to defend Cipher who is the big bad of the movie. The Monster star argued that her character is not inherently evil, but she is driven by immense power.
In the video published by ET Canada, Theron also admitted that she is a fan of the franchise and it is an incredible honor to be its first female villain. Moreover, she is grateful for all the encouragement and support from the studio and the crew to be “as psychotic” as she wants. Michelle Rodriguez already thinks that Cipher is the most powerful villain the team has ever encountered.
Fate of the Furious will open on Apr. 14. It also stars Jason Statham, Nathalie Emmanuel, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Kristofer Hivju, and Scott Eastwood. The movie is directed by F. Gary Gray.
