Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment to the largely successful Fast & Furious franchise, has been breaking records all over the world, but it seems, the end is near. According to movie producer Neal Moritz, the conclusion to the story of Dom Torreto (Vin Diesel) and his family has already been decided.
The Epic Conclusion to an Epic Adventure
Dom and his team has gone through a lot of changes over the past ten years. From notorious street racers and thieves to agents working on behalf of the law enforcement. Throughout their journey, they also gained new enemies and lost a few friends along the way.
But it is almost the end of the road. In an interview with Collider, Moritz revealed what they have planned for the Fast & Furious franchise.
“We kind of have the ending point of the franchise, but we don’t know the in-betweens yet,” he explained. “Yeah, the plan is to make two more movies.”
Diesel already announced that Fate of the Furious is the beginning of a new trilogy. However, he did not detail whether the new movie is going to signal the end of the franchise. If the studio plans on making two more movies, the series will end at the tenth installment.
Of course, there is also talks about a spin-off featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s Agent Hobbs. If the main story is indeed ending, the studio might want to explore other ways to continue the franchise.
“That’s just all of us kind of putting our heads together and coming together with something that we think is very special,” Moritz added about the remaining two movies.
Diesel, who also serves as a movie producer, is also involved in drawing what the next two installments will look like. Moritz pointed out that the actor knows the characters of the franchise better than anyone else and, therefore, is included in the creation of the movie. Moritz stated that they all worked really closely from pre-production to the end of the movie.
Fast & Furious 9 Plans
But will the awesome and dangerous cyber terrorist Cipher (played by Charlize Theron) return to the follow-up to this year’s blockbuster success? While the Academy Award winner has not signed up yet, Moritz hope that she will reprise her villainous role.
“We would love [her] to be involved in the next couple of films,” he said. “One hundred percent.”
Planning for the next two movies have just started, but there is currently no plans to film them back-to-back. As Moritz pointed out, they stopped working on Fate of the Furious around two days before the entire movie was first screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
With plans to conclude the series, the stakes are going to get even higher and the stunts more dangerous.
As for a director, Moritz admitted that they have not talked to anyone about helming the next installment. However, he would be happy if F. Gary Gray, who directed the box office hit Fate of the Furious, come back to the franchise.
