After Fate of the Furious, screenwriter Chris Morgan wants to bring back a fan-favorite character from the dead. In a recent interview ahead of the movie’s release next weekend, the genius behind the franchise talked about what is next for Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) and his family.
Resurrecting the Dead
So many have changed since The Fast and the Furious was released in 2001. The street racing team went from traffic nuances to thieves in the span of eight movies. A lot of people have been a part of Dom’s little family, some of them left and replaced but a few of them eventually find their way back.
The ninth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise might see the return of a familiar face. In an interview with Slash Film, Morgan revealed that he wants to see Sung Kang return to the franchise. When asked whether fans will ever see Han Seoul-Oh back on the big screen, here is what the screenwriter said:
“Now, that’s funny because I’ve actually been thinking about that a lot,” he shared. “But I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out. I love Sung – he’s one of my favorite people on the planet.”
Unlike other characters, bringing Han back would be a challenge. The street racer/thief already died in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. However, because fans of the franchise loved the character so much, he was brought back from the dead in Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6. His return messed up the timeline and he, once again, died.
Morgan did not say how he could bring back the character to the franchise. Perhaps, Han could return via flashbacks in future movies. His car crashed and exploded causing the character’s demise. But for sure Morgan can think of a clever way to resurrect the character or just bring the Asian actor back to set.
Another Beloved Actor Remembered
In other news, Scott Eastwood talked about his upcoming movie with Today. The son of Clint Eastwood was asked about his friend and action movie star Paul Walker who died in a car crash in 2013.
In a way, Eastwood is stepping into the hole Walker left behind, but he does not see it that way. He told Savannah Guthrie that Walker’s presence is still very much present in the franchise three years after his tragic death.
According to Eastwood, Walker was in everybody’s mind while filming Fate of the Furious. Moreover, his late friend motivated him to do better in the upcoming movie. “What better way to continue his legacy than to keep making these films that everybody loves so much,” he told the host.
When it was announced that he will join the franchise in a still-unannounced new role, Eastwood wrote a long and heartfelt message on Instagram. After teasing his character, he also talked about his friendship with Walker who he says was a role model and like a big brother. They used to travel and go surfing together, he revealed to followers.
It's hard to put into words how excited I am for the next Fast & Furious. To me, the series is so much more than just a franchise. It’s a legacy. These great actors who have been in it together for so long have become a family. I absolutely can’t wait to join it. Now I can’t say too much, but I get to play a new character who operates under Kurt Russell in the movie, which is incredible, because Kurt was a total childhood hero of mine growing up. Very much looking forward to learning a thing or two from such an original and cool guy. Paul was a close friend of mine. We surfed together, traveled together, and he was a huge role model and influencing figure in my life when I was younger. He still is. He was an older brother to me. For me to be able to add to the F&F story, Paul’s story, and the FAST family is like a dream come true. Gary Gray and Neal Moritz – I can’t wait to get started and dive in. Vin – thank you for the support and the insight. Paul – I am going to make you proud. #F8
