Ryan Gosling is the first man to walk on the surface of the moon in his next movie. The Academy Award-nominated actor is teaming up Academy Award winner Damien Chapelle in a Neil Armstrong biopic titled First Man. The movie is set to come out in 2018.
This is not the first time that the 36-year-old actor will work with Chapelle. The award-winning director also helmed the critically-acclaimed modern musical La La Land. It starred Gosling as a Jazz musician who fell in love with an aspiring actress played by Emma Stone. The movie went on to earn a slew of awards including six Oscars, seven Golden Globes and four BAFTAs.
First Man Movie Details
Information about the upcoming biopic is scarce, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Singer has signed up to pen the script. The screenwriter was responsible for the movie The Fifth State starring Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks leader Julian Assange. He also worked as writer for popular television shows such as Fringe, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The West Wing. He has one Oscar for the screenplay of Spotlight.
First Man is described to be a first-person account of NASA’s mission to send the first man on the moon. The movie will focus on the events from 1961 to 1969. It will recount the story of Armstrong, the many sacrifices of the nation to bring him to the moon and the most dangerous mission in the history of the world.
The upcoming biopic is based on the authorized biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong written by James. R. Hansen. It was published in 2005 by Simon & Schuster. It won the american Astronautical Society’s Prize for Astronautical Literature. He also penned the books The Wind and Beyond and Truth, Lies and O-Rings.
Wyck Godfrey and Marty Browen of Temple Hill Entertainment will sit as producers together with Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Town) will be the executive producers. DreamWorks Pictures is also on-board to co-finance the movie. Universal first announced the project around December last year. First Man will be released on Oct. 12, 2018.
Chazelle’s Plans For the Neil Armstrong Biopic
In a previous interview with Digital Spy, Chazelle revealed that he plans to give the biopic a darker tone. “We’re approaching it as a thriller to try to get at how insane and death-defying everything was,” he explained. He explained that it is necessary to tell the story to the modern audience because people tend to take for granted the world-changing missing of Armstrong and NASA during the ‘60s.
Apparently, he has been working on the project with Singer for two years now. They plant to begin filming First Man sometime next year.
