First Teaser Out for ‘Wolf Hall’

The adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s “Wolf Hall” novel on television has unveiled its first teaser over the holidays. The show will debut in the UK on BBC Two this coming Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. and will subsequently air on PBS in the USA on Sunday, April 5, 2015. Read on for more about this update.

“Wolf Hall” is part of Mantel’s novels about the reign of the Tudors, with this particularly story centering on Thomas Cromwell, the son of a blacksmith who rose to become King Henry VIII’s most influential and trusted advisor.

The series, which is helmed by Peter Kosminsky (“White Oleander”) and written by Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), is led by Mark Rylance ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Cromwell and Damian Lewis (“Homeland”) as Henry VIII. The show also features Mark Gatiss (“Sherlock”), Jonathan Pryce (“Pirates of the Caribbean”), Claire Foye (“Upstairs Downstairs”), Charity Wakefield (“Any Human Heart”), Joanne Whalley (“Jamaica Inn”), Jessica Raine (“Call the Midwife”) and Saskia Reeves (“Page Eight”). It is going to air for six episodes.

The teaser presents the arrival of Anne Boleyn in the Tudor castle. Cromwell was also seen advising the King to be a better royal, which the monarch didn’t seem to like. The teaser hints of tension between Henry VIII and his most loyal subject. You can watch the teaser in the Twitter link below.

According to Radio Times, the author, Ms. Mantel, is apparently pleased with the way BBC has adapted her novel, saying that it has managed to present a show that is both historically accurate with good dramatic flair.

“That is vital as an understanding, as a basis to begin work. Because as soon as you decide this is too complicated for the viewer or history is an inconvenient shape – ‘I’ll just tidy it up’ – you fall into a cascade of errors which ends in nonsense,” said Mantel to the audience at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, as published in Radio Times.

Rylance, on the other hand, expressed elation over having to work alongside the show’s director again and described Mantel’s novel as a masterpiece.

Catch “Wolf Hall” when it debuts on BBC Two on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. in the United Kingdom and on Sunday, April 5, 2015, on PBS in the United States. Don’t forget to check the teaser here.
