Syfy has released its first teaser to “The Expanse,” its newest drama series, which is currently filming its first season. There is some buzz about what’s seen in the teaser, with its gravity-defying sex scene. But that’s not all there is to look forward to. Read on for more details.

Based on the book series coined by James S. A. Corey, a.k.a. Ty Franck, and Daniel Abraham, who also serve as producers on the series, Dave Howe, the president of the cable network, calls “The Expanse” its most ambitious series to date. The show is set 200 years from now, and the humans have already colonized much of the solar system. The story starts when a woman goes missing, turning her case into a manhunt that will uncover a big conspiracy that affects the course of history.

The teaser presents a wonderfully crafted world, as you would imagine what the future looks like, and it serves to give the viewers some ideas about its characters and the premise. According to the show’s writers, they pretty much remained true to the book series.

It presents Thomas Jane, the show’s lead star, as Detective Miler who tracks the missing woman; and then there’s Steven Strait, the other lead, whose character James Holden, is actually the main protagonist in the book series. The trailer also shows a couple having zero gravity sex, which has been buzzing on social media, and there’s a montage of interplanetary negotiations and conspiracy to depict “The Expanse’s” overall tone.

Syfy has given “The Expanse” with a 10-episode first season order, and its premiere date, while still unconfirmed, is assumed to be coming later in the year. Terry McDonough serves as the director for the pilot episode, with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby as its writers.

Below is the show’s synopsis as presented by Syfy on the official website.

This hour-long, ten episode series is based on the popular New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey).

Thomas Jane (Hung, The Punisher) will play the lead character of Detective Miller, a native of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Detective Miller works for a corporate security force that operates as the law in the asteroid belt. Ragged and in search of something he can’t identify, Miller finds a new sense of purpose when he’s put in charge of the investigation of a missing heiress.

Shohreh Aghdashloo (The House of Sand and Fog, 24, House of Saddam) will portray Chrisjen Avasarala, a smart and passionate member of a political family legacy who has risen high in the ranks of Earth’s governing body.

Steven Strait (Magic City, City Island, 10,000 B.C.) will play Holden, an officer on the ice-carrying freighter, the Canterbury. Holden is a natural leader who’s not sure he wants responsibility, but will soon have no choice when he is drawn into a dangerous plot.
