Amazon is set to release all of the episodes of “Transparent,” its critically lauded family comedy, on the eve of Friday, Sept. 26, 2014. The show is from Jill Soloway (“Six Feet Under”) and centers on a father (played by Jeffrey Tambor), who finally comes out as a transgender woman named Maura. How will his grown-up children and his former wife come to terms with this? That’s partly what the series will touch on, and here are five other best things about “Transparent.”
It will have real transgender actors in the cast.
Tambor put so much commitment in playing Maura that he actually went around town imbibing her vibe and spirit. Soloway revealed in many interviews that she had created the role specifically with the actor in mind, but for the other transgender that will appear in the series, the roles will be played by actual transgender actors. Soloway said in one of the panel interviews during the summer that there was actually a program for hiring transgender for the show and that this was set up by the writers. Additionally, there are also trans among the crew, making “Transparent” the biggest and most authentic transgender series production to date.
It was given free reign by Amazon.
Soloway’s deal with Amazon was very open, and unlike productions on broadcast television, where the network suits always have the last say, the writers and producers were given freedom to tell the story they want to say, with actors they want for the cast. Amazon even provided Soloway with an “escape clause” according to Daily Dot, which allowed her to take her show on another network, should it not make it to series. Overall, Soloway is happy working with Amazon for this show. Thus, viewers can expect that the series would be exceptional, as she had full control.
It has a phenomenal group of actors.
When the pilot episode was unveiled last February, what was glaringly obvious, apart from its unique storyline, was that the critics loved the cast. Their characters are not exactly likeable, as some of them are, in fact, losers. But the actors are very capable of playing their parts. Other than Tambor, “Transparent” also stars Gaby Hoffman (“Girls”), Jay Duplass (“The League”) and Amy Landecker (“Enough Said”) playing Moira’s kids.
It has a fresh story about family.
While the show is an exploration into the life of a transgender, at the core, it’s still a story about family, albeit dealing with a unique circumstance. It isn’t only Moira who is holding a secret he’d like to unload, the kids have their own secrets as well. Many families in real life go through similar struggles, and “Transparent” gives family conflicts a different outlook.
It’s from Jill Soloway.
Soloway is a critic favorite and her credentials as an award-winning writer and director for HBO’s “Six Feet Under” (2001-2005) speak a lot about the quality of her work.
There you have it for “Transparent” coming to Amazon on Friday, Sept 26, 2014, with all ten episodes of the first season for release. Keep your browsers parked at Movie News Guide (MNG) for the recaps.
