“Touched by an Angel” premiered on Sept. 21, 1994 on CBS. The series starred Roma Downey, Della Reese and John Dye, with Valerie Bertinelli joining afterwards. Read on for more about “Touched by an Angel.”
Twenty years ago, five shows debuted on network television that created a lasting impact with viewers. As we begin Fall TV 2014, let’s take a look back at these classics in our flashback to Fall TV 1994.
This supernatural drama didn’t feature a lot of scary monsters and beasts, as what viewers can mostly watch today. It had an angel, Monica (Roma Downey), disguised as a case worker who came to the rescue of humans in need of hope and salvation. Monica was guided by Tess (Della Reese), the elder angel who also taught Monica a few things about what it really takes to help people. Later on, the two were joined by Gloria (Valerie Bertinelli), a much younger angel than Monica, who, by this time, was already training to the a supervisor.
The show also had Andrew (John Dye), the “Angel of Death,” who was originally supposed to be a recurring part only. Because the show didn’t dwell on dark themes, this angel was deemed compassionate.
“Touched by an Angel” received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations during its run, particularly during the third season and thereafter, when the script and direction of the series were tweaked. Some of the show’s most notable guest stars included Bill Cosby, Muhammad Ali, Celine Dion and Maya Angelou.
In 1996, “Promised Land” was spun from this series, and the shows did several crossovers. But “Touched by an Angel” outlived its spinoff for many more years.
