In the world of entertainment, no one can ever count out Oprah Winfrey. Even though the former talk show host had problems with her business as well as suffering from a drop in income of more than $88 million since last year, Winfrey returned to the No. 1 spot in the Celebrity 100 annual list by Forbes magazine.
The list ranks the 100 celebrities that are the most powerful and Winfrey had fallen back to No. 2 over the past two years. The lists’ top ten is dominated by women and includes the likes of Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Beyonce, Madonna and Lady Gaga.
Oprah no longer has her own popular talk show and saw her earnings go from $165 million in June of 2011 to $77 million in 2012, but that did not keep her from moving up to No. 1 in the list.
On this year’s list, Oprah did not have the highest earnings, but her scores in fame, social networking, and press mentions helped her regain the top spot on the list.
One of the reasons she remains a top force in Hollywood is her Oprah Winfrey Network. Between 2008 and 2012, the network accumulated over $330 million in losses, but today is a media machine with great potential that could turn a profit by the end of 2013.
Winfrey is returning to produce shows that are must see, such as the two-night interview with Lance Armstrong. She is also producing scripted shows with the help of another member of the Celebrity 100 list Tyler Perry.
Her O Magazine and talk shows featuring Rachael Ray and Dr. Phil have given her other areas to draw earnings.
The list does take into consideration earnings, but looks at fame, number of mentions on television and in print along with their strength in Internet.
