It looks like Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have another thing to worry about aside from their divorce. Their former nanny, Simonette DaCosta, is asking for $100,000 in damages after not being paid for working 24 hours a day. Read on to learn more about this scoop.
Mariah Carey may be worth millions of dollars, but it seems like she doesn’t know how to compensate her nannies very well. According to TMZ, the ex-couple’s former nanny, Simonette DaCosta, filed a lawsuit against them after being forced to work for 24 hours a day without being paid overtime. Yikes!
According to the documents presented, DaCosta said that she started working for the family in October 2013 and was fired in January 2014. According to DaCosta, her responsibilities included “feeding, bathing and comforting” the twins, Moroccan and Monroe, who were still infants at that time. The former nanny claims that Carey expects her to be available on-call 24 hours a day, but she wasn’t given any payment for overtime services rendered. The documents presented claims that DaCosta was only paid between $6,000 and $7,200 a month for taking care of the twins.
According to the report, DaCosta’s lawyer, Eli Freedberg, said that DaCosta was not only expected to care for the couple’s twins, but she was also required to go with Carey at their homes in Tribeca or California or during her international concerts.
She also claims that Carey calls her in the middle of the night to ask for updates on her twins or demand DaCosta to take the twins to Carey.
DaCosta said that Carey fired her for feeling threatened of her relationship with the twins. According to her, Carey was worried that her kids were getting confused about who their real mom was.
In an interview with radio station Power 105.1, Carey admitted that she has a high rate of firing nannies at home. She said that she fires nannies “if they try to make themselves more important in the baby’s mind than me.” Cannon expressed support over his wife’s decision and said that he would also have an issue if his children choose to go to the nanny first before going to their mom.
