“The Last Man on Earth,” the latest comedy series starring Will Forte on FOX, has added another woman in the cast. The show signed Mary Steenburgen to the series, joining earlier actresses already cast like January Jones (“Mad Men”), Kristen Schaal (“30 Rock”), Mel Rodriguez (“Enlisted”) and Cleopatra Coleman (“Step Up Revolution”). Read on for the details of this news story.
As reported on Entertainment Weekly (EW), the role of Steenburgen remains a top secret, along with everything about the series so far. The show’s details, which drives around the premise of a man being the sole survivor on earth following a catastrophic event that destroys the human race, is being kept under wraps even as Forte makes the rounds at press tours.
Recently, the actor was present at the Television Critics Association event in California, where he discussed shooting for the series. Forte described that work on the set involves a lot of smashing on things and working with objects in order to deliver the comedy.
“It has been a fun show to shoot because I get to do a lot of wish fulfillment. I would just go around and break stuff. It’s been really fun to break a lot of stuff,” said Forte to the press, as published in the EW report.
Forte hinted that the series will make use of flashbacks, as well as other devices, in exploring the narrative. Perhaps this is where Steenburgen and the rest of the female actresses figure into the story.
The actor also said that there may be a nod to “Castaway,” the movie starring Tom Hanks, which was about a man living all by himself in an island.
“The Last Man on Earth” is currently shooting the 10th episode of the series. The actor purposely did not shave his beard during filming. He started growing this in March of last year, when the show was still in development.
Here’s the official synopsis of the show, as posted on the official website on FOX:
The year is 2022, and after an unlikely event, only one man is left on earth: PHIL MILLER (Forte), who used to be just an average guy who loved his family and hated his job at the bank. Now, in his RV, Phil searches the country for other survivors. He has traveled to every city, every town and every outpost in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and has found no one, which leads him to the painful realization that he is almost certainly the last living being on the face of the earth… THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is a comedy about a man trying to make lemonade out of the most soul-crushing lemon there is. But if anyone can do it, Phil Miller can. He’s not about to give up now. He is sad and so, so very lonely. But he’ll get through this. Because there’s a small kernel of hope that somewhere out there is another survivor. And maybe one day, they’ll run into each other. That would be a good day. And if that survivor happened to be a woman? Well, then that would be a great day.
