Two years later, the series was developed by “Boardwalk Empire” writer Margaret Nagle. It was developed as a “series prototype,” “a pilot-type production order with additional backup scripts.” It is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Sergio Aguero through ABC Studios, Amblin Television and Filmax International.
“Red Band Society” is a coming of age drama that centers around a group of teenagers, who try to live their normal lives at the hospital. The teens meet each other as patients confined in the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles, California. They will try to experience friendship, love and helping one another as they face the challenges between life and death.

The young roster of teens include comatose patient Charlie (Griffin Gluck), a mean beauty-and-brains cheerleader named Kara Souders (Zoe Levin), anorexic Emma Chota (Ciara Bravo), Jordi Palacios (Nolan Sotillo) and Dash Hosney (Brian “Astro” Bradley), a young man with cystic fibrosis. The group is headed by a leader of sorts, the osteosarcoma-stricken patient named Leo Roth (Charlie Rowe).
