“Fresh Off the Boat” Episode 8 “Phillip Goldstein” aired on Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC. The episode kicks off with Eddie Huang being called to the principal’s office to welcome the new kid, Phillip, as a “first-day friend.” Read on to know Eddie’s reaction.
Eddie is excited because Phillip is also Asian. He even concludes that Phillip is Chinese just like him. The clumsy and innocent Principal Hunter gets something right for the first time – but it does not last long.
Turns out, Eddie and Phillip are too different in many levels. First, Phillip is adopted by a strict Jewish couple. Second, he is too mature for his age with his interest in Tolstoy and theater, fashion sense in wearing a chic scarf and luxurious sports coat and slick hairstyle. His only similarity to Eddie is eating Chinese food during Christmas.
Eddie immediately confronts Phillip that they do not like each other. He straightforwardly adds that Phillip’s company is “undesirable.” Phillip agrees with poise.
However, the whole school thinks the two Asian kids are friends (the only Asian kids in the school, by the way). That is why they are paired in gym class.
Later, Jessica is informed about Phillip and immediately likes the kid. She thinks he is “the model Chinese son.” She has been criticizing Eddie’s carefree attitude and music taste ever since. Eddie ignores it completely and focuses more on convincing his mother to let him watch the Beastie Boys concert. As expected, Jessica says no.
Despite Eddie’s hip-hop attitude and language (which is kinda dirty), he is actually a smart kid. That is proved when he used Phillip to convince Jessica. The swooning mother eventually lets them see the concert. Actually, it seems to be the win-win situation for the unlikely pair because Eddie also accompanied Phillip to watch “Les Miserables.”
The downside is, the “Les Miserables” musicale is before the Beastie Boys concert. It is uncertain if what is going on inside Phillip’s head when he suddenly left Eddie who was still in the restroom. The poor fanatic Eddie misses the concert to find for his strange companion. Out of hopelessness, he asks for his mother’s help.
In the end, Phillip is in his house all along. He says that he did not need Eddie anymore after the musicale. As a mother, Jessica scolds him for being a bad “Chinese boy.” Then the Huang leaves the Goldsteins’ home.
All’s well that end’s well when Jessica accompanied her son to the next night’s Beastie Boys show. The rude and snobbish African kid, Walter, happens to be a fan of Beastie Boys as well. When he saw Eddie wearing a fan shirt at school, the Asian kid and the black kid start to bond because of the “white Jewish rappers.”
