Constance Wu has been appearing in several TV series before Nahnatchka Khan’s “Fresh Off the Boat” (FOTB). However, “FOTB” became Wu’s ultimate blessing, which took her to greater heights as an actress. Read on for Wu’s exclusive interview with Malay Mail Online.
The 33-year-old comedienne plays Chef Eddie Huang’s tiger mom, Jessica. Jessica always makes sure that her husband, Louis, is on track in his restaurant career and her children, Eddie, Evan and Emery, are striving for educational excellence.
Wu told Malay Mail Online that Jessica became famous for “celebrating how great mums are.” Jessica portrays every good mother who strives to mold their children into good people. Wu played Jessica as a strong and, at the same time, weak character to humanize the role and make it more interesting.
Turns out, Jessica is very different from Wu’s mother. Wu believed her mother is much gentler than Jessica.
“In fact, she was really whimsical and fun-loving,” Wu said.
Wu shared that her parents are proud of her success in “FOTB.” She admitted that it was a difficult journey. It was because she became independent as soon as she turned 18. She revealed that she could not bear asking money from her parents. Interestingly, she was a waitress in a steakhouse by nighttime as she joined auditions during the day.
While most people prefer dogs or cats, Wu loved her pet bunny dearly. She named it Lida Rose.
“FOTB” is ABC’s television adaptation from restaurateur Eddie Huang’s memoir of the same title. It focuses on the Huang family’s life as immigrants in the ’90s United States. It also stars Randall Park as Louis Huang, Hudson Yang as Eddie, Forrest Wheeler as Emery and Ian Chen as Evan.
“FOTB” Season 2 has no official premiere date yet.
