Fox has announced the official release date for its “X-Men” spinoff, “Gambit” solo movie. Read on for more details on this story.

According to Comicbook.com, Fox has recently announced the official release date of the “X-Men” spinoff/”Gambit” movie, slating the pic for release on Oct. 7, 2016. Actor Channing Tatum has been previously tapped to take the lead titular role.

Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, the “X-Men” character Gambit’s first published appearance was in “The Uncanny X-Men Annual #14,” but this issue happens after his first full appearance in “The Uncanny X-Men #266.” Remy LeBeau, the mutant who would later become Gambit, was abandoned at birth by his birth father due to his unusual red-on-black eyes. He was stolen from a New Orleans orphanage by the Thieves Guild and given to Antiquary, a collector of children, who considered Remy a perfect work of art. Gambit manifested his powers in his teenage years, giving him the mutant ability to charge inanimate objects by tapping into their potential energy, transforming it into kinetic energy and causing them to explode, using this in conjunction with playing cards which he charges and hurls into his targets.

Gambit’s first film appearance was in the 2009 film, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” where he was portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch, alongside Hugh Jackman who played the titular role. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” opened at the top of the box office on its worldwide release, grossing $179 million in the United States and Canada and over $373 million worldwide. Reviews were generally negative, with critics considering the film uninspired, criticizing its screenplay and poorly produced CGI but praising Jackman’s performance. Jackman himself confessed to being unhappy with the final result of the film. The film was followed up by another Wolverine movie entitled “The Wolverine” in 2013.

Rumor has it that “Robocop” screenwriter Josh Zetumer will write the screenplay based on a treatment by legendary “X-Men” comic book writer and Gambit creator Chris Claremont. Tatum is reported to produce the pic with his partner at Free Association Reid Carolin, The Donners Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner and Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg.
