With only two more seasons, HBO’s highest-rated series, Game of Thrones, is coming to an end. The award-winning fantasy-drama based on novels written by George R.R. Martin are expected to wrap up existing storylines, but what about the unexpected pairing of Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju). In an interview, showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Beioff talked about the future of everyone’s OTP.
Accidental Love Story
Brienne and Tormund met last season at Castle Black where Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) were finally reunited. Because she swore to protect Sansa, Brienne had to come with her. Meanwhile, Jon brought Tormund back from the North Wall.
Their meeting was such a hit that it even sprouted a meme and viral videos that re-imagines the two characters as leads to a romantic comedy like the one below c/o Nerdist. While the two became Internet’s favorite loveteam, is there a chance that they will live happily ever after?

The short answer is no. In an interview with EW, Weiss and Benioff stated that, now that they have become fan-favorites, they have to die.
“There was the episode where they’re all leaving Castle Black together and there’s a shot — it wasn’t scripted at all — of two of them on horseback and she looks at him and he smiles at her,” Weiss recounted. “It’s not something you could ever write. It’s just this moment where this guy is creeping out on her and he smiles in a way that makes her very uncomfortable and she just looks away. I saw it 150 times and every time it made me laugh; it’s purely the two of them.”
There is definitely chemistry between the two characters that even Weiss could see. However, Benioff had to deliver the bad news.
“It inspires us because we need to kill one of them now because there can’t be a happy ending or any romantic connection on the show,” he stated. “But we’re not going to tell you which one.”
Of course, Benioff was kidding (or is he?), but the show is not exactly known for giving its characters happy endings. In fact, a majority of the fan-favorites were killed or ended up having a miserable fate so it would not be a surprise if Benioff keeps his word.
Moreover, from the looks of it, Brienne is more uncomfortable rather than pleased with Tormund’s feelings for her. She likely is still dealing with her feelings for Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) with whom she had a connection with in earlier seasons. On the other hand, Tormund’s past flings include a bear.
Game of Thrones Season 7 Details
Game of Thrones Season 7 is set to premiere on July 16, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. In a previous interview, Weiss and Benioff commented that the series’ return was pushed back because the tag line of the upcoming season is “Winter is here” which does not really go well with the warmer weather. Fans will have to wait even longer for the final season which is set to be released in 2019.
The upcoming season will also star Kit Harrington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Wiliams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey. Season 6’s breakout star Bella Ramsey will also reprise the role of Lady Lyanna who might be teaming up with Hivju’s Tormund.
Iain Glen who plays the role of Ser Jorah was spotted heading to Northern Ireland during filming, reported Digital Spy. Joseph Mawles (Benjen Sark a.k.a. Coldhands) was also present on the set.
Meanwhile, Sherlock and Doctor Who writer Mark Gatis who played Tycho Nestoris, has confirmed his character’s reappearance. Jessica Henwick who recently starred in Marvel’s Iron Fist also revealed that Nymeria will be in Season 7.
