“Gang Related” Season 1 Episode 1 “Pilot” premiered on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 9 p.m. on FOX. “Fast & Furious” film franchise writer Chris Morgan takes us to the action-filled, crime-busting world of the Los Angeles elite Gang Task Force in his TV debut as the showrunner and creator of FOX’s newest action drama series, “Gang Related.” Read on to find out more about “Gang Related” Season 1 Episode 1 “Pilot” recap and “Gang Related” Season 1 Episode 2 “Sangre por Sangre” spoilers.

“Gang Related” Season 1 Premiere Episode 1 “Pilot” is directed by Allen Hughes and written by Chris Morgan. The episode began with the recent promotion of Detective Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez of “The Wire”) to be part of the Gang Task Force in the academy. Sam Chapel (Terry O’Quinn of “Lost”) leads the academy’s elite group that is especially tasked to take down dangerous organisations that endanger their city.

Unknown to his team, Ryan was a part of the powerful Los Angelicos gang before joining the police. Javier Acosta (Cliff Curtis of “Trauma”), the gang’s leader, had helped him to infiltrate into the academy. Acosta’s two sons, Carlos (Rey Gallegos) and Daniel (Jay Hernandez of “Last Resort”), also knew about his secret.

It seemed that he cannot run from his past with the Los Angelicos gang. His latest rundown with them was the death of his trusted partner and real-life best friend, James. James was killed by Carlos. Now, Ryan is set on taking revenge on the gang with the help of DEA Agent Cassius Green (RZA).

It is up to Ryan to decide on where his loyalty should be and now he is stuck with helping both sides. He was ordered by Sam to raid the gang’s whereabouts, but he had informed some of Javier’s gang members beforehand.

Other “Gang Related” characters include Tae Kim (Sung Kang of “Fast & Furious”), Veronica “Vee” Dotsen (Inbar Lavi of “Underemployed”), Tio Gordo (Emilio Rivera of “Sons of Anarchy”), Slotko Yegenev (Pasha D. Lychnikoff), Anton Dotsen (Konstantin Lavysh), and Yuri Letnov (Yevgeniy Kartashov).

Ryan must track down rival gang members who shot Carlos (Rey Gallegos), in order both to avoid a gang war and to cover up his own involvement in the shooting. Meanwhile, Ryan gets closer to Jessica (Shantel VanSanten), who is investigating another shooting, and finds himself genuinely falling for her.

According to Spoiler TV, Ryan gets caught again in the middle as he found out about the death of his “gang” brother, Carlos. It was the second death he encountered since his big jump from the gang to the police academy. He found out that Carlos was killed by members of a rival gang. Will he join Acosta again in the Los Angelicos or stay with his new-found family? What ever Ryan chooses, he must face the consequences that may fall upon him.

On the other hand, Ryan continues to get himself in danger on overstepping the lines. He had realized that he already fell in love with Jessica (Shantel Vansanten). Jessica is Sam Chapel’s daughter, who works as a Assistant District Attorney. Could it be another step in completing his new life? How will Sam react about their relationship if he knew about Ryan’s real identity?

“Gang Related” joins other “culture-diverse” series for the 2014-2015 television season. The trend had started from ABC’s “Scandal” starring Kerry Washington and “Modern Family.” Several television networks also took the successful path of featuring Black, Latino and Asian characters in most of their upcoming television series for 2014-2015.

Zap2it reported that the Season 1 Episode “Pilot” of “Gang Related” had garnered low ratings with only 2.93 total million of U.S. viewers. It’s too early to tell if “Gang Related” will be a hit or a continued flop among the newest television series that premiered during the 2014 summer TV season. Let’s just hope that it all turns out for the best.
