As former Detective Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) was processed into jail, Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) watched it happen on the news, and felt guilty due to his wrongful imprisonment. Meanwhile, Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) confronted Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) about his role in planting incriminating evidence so that Nate would be found guilty, and thanked him for doing it. Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) and Oliver celebrated one month of Connor’s sobriety with fake alcohol, while Rebecca Sutter (Katie Findlay) discovered that she was being brought in for questioning as Nate’s phone records had shown that Rebecca had contacted him on the night of the murder.

The next day, Frank and Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil) were surprised when Annelise Keating’s (Viola Davis) mother (Cecily Tyson) showed up as her daughter needed her. Upstairs, she opened the curtains of her room, and insisted that she get out of bed, but as Annelise refused to do so, she cradled her daughter in her arms and told her that everything was going to be alright because she was there now.

Later that day, they were all informed that they were going to work on a new case, and that Bonnie was going to take the lead. Their new client was a nurse named Jolene Samuels (Mageina Tovah), who had been accused of raping a male patient. However, she claimed that she didn’t do this, and was afraid of being placed on the sex offender’s registry.

At court, Prosecutor Winthrop (Michelle Hurd) tried to paint her client as a victim, and tried to gain the jury’s sympathy by saying that cases like that are rare, especially as a man was the victim. Meanwhile, Bonnie told the jury that these were all untrue, and that Mr. Chad Manning (Chris Kos) just wanted a payout from the hospital. However, she slipped up in her opening statement, which made the hospital’s lawyer, Mr. David Tucker (Mark Familglietti) doubt in Bonnie’s confidence to win in court.

Afterwards, Michaela and Frank went to meet the prosecution’s key witness’ ex-girlfriend, in order to find a way to discredit him. As they went over to her, Michaela asked Frank if Annelise had a plan to get Nate freed, but Frank just told her to be quiet.

The next day, at court, Bonnie was able to discredit the key witness and proved that he might have seen something that wasn’t what it was as he had suffered from a mild stroke that day, which caused disorientation and memory loss.

Back in the house, Annelise’s mother tried to get rid of Sam Keating’s (Tom Verica) suits, and called her by her real name- Anna Mae. However, Annelise insisted that she call her by the name that she preferred to go by, which was Annelise. However, her mother argued that since she was the one who gave birth to her, that she had the right to call her any name that she wanted to call her. After Annelise allowed her to get Sam’s things and went back into bed, her mother asked her if she killed Sam, and told her that she wouldn’t judge her if she had. However, Annelise stayed silent.

Back in court, they learned that Jolene often went to a website in which users posted about their sexual exploits, and that she had posted the details of when she and Mr. Manning had slept together. This angered Bonnie as Jolene had lied to her. Jolene then told her that it had been consensual and begged her not to give up on her. Because of this, everyone else except Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry) started giving suggestions which caused Bonnie to scream at them, and told them to just do their jobs. Annelise’s mother then came down, and after being introduced to the Keating 5, she told them to clean up the house, which was a mess.

Wes then took this opportunity to slip into Annelise’s room to tell her that Rebecca had been called in for questioning. She then told Wes to tell Rebecca to stick to story, and before they could say anything else, Annelise’s mother came back and shooed Wes away.

Later that day, Rebecca reassured Wes that she wouldn’t do anything to incriminate herself and told Detective Bryce (April Parker-Jones) that Nate had asked her to plant evidence on Sam, and when he didn’t, he had threatened her, and had killed Sam.

At Oliver’s apartment, while Oliver used his skills to find out more about Mr. Channing, he complained to Connor that he hadn’t met his friends yet. Connor then agreed to let him meet Michaela, Laurel and Wes. Afterwards, they discovered that Mr. Manning was a homosexual, as he posted pictures of himself on a homosexual dating phone application. However, after presenting this in court, the judge ruled that this was discriminatory, and had the evidence of this thrown out.

Afterwards, Tucker approached Bonnie again and told her to settle instead of dragging it out in court. However, Bonnie refused to settle because Jolene and not the hospital was her client. Meanwhile, Laurel discovered that Michaela was trying to find out when Nate’s arraignment was and warned her not to do anything reckless.

Later that night, Frank was surprised to see that Bonnie was drinking from Annelise’s vodka. She then confronted Frank as to why he hadn’t told her about Sam, and told him that another reason why she refused to talk to Annelise about their current case was because Annelise didn’t trust her enough.

Meanwhile, at a bar, Michaela pretended to be a court stenographer and flirted with the Assistant District Attorney assigned to Nate’s case in order to find out what Rebecca had told the detectives. After informing Wes, Laurel and Connor about what Rebecca had said the next day, Wes told them that he would handle it. However, he just went to the police, and looked up Rudy Walters’ arrest record. The policewoman in charge of the desk also told him that Rudy had been transferred to a psychiatric hospital after he had a nervous breakdown due to a drug overdose.

At Annelise’s house, Annelise came down and drank, while she watched her mother cook food. Her mother then told her that in her opinion, all that a man did was take things, while women were nurturing and caring. However, Annelise found this funny as she felt that neither of them were the nurturing type. She then got upset at her mother, who ended up telling her that her Uncle Clyde had died a long time ago, and that he had gotten what he had deserved. This angered her even more and she threw her glass on the wall because this meant that her mother had known that her uncle had raped her as a little girl, and did nothing about it. She then went on to say that Sam knew exactly what she was, and that that incident had influence who she was at present. Her mother then told her that she and her sister had been raped as well, but in spite of this, Annelise told her mother to go home.

Meanwhile, at court, Asher told Bonnie that he tried to see if Mr. Manning had done this sort of thing before, and had looked at hospital visitor logs, only to discover that he had visited the legal department a lot during the case against Jolene. Bonnie then got a brilliant idea, and got Connor to ask for Oliver’s help.

At court, Bonnie and Prosecutor Winthrop agreed to settle with the amount of $ 500,000 and Mr. Tucker, as the hospital’s lawyer, who would foot the bill agreed to these terms. Afterwards, Bonnie informed the court that in doing so, Mr. Tucker had agreed to pay himself half of that amount, as they had discovered that Mr. Manning and Mr. Tucker were lovers, based on the emails and pictures they sent each other, and that they had successfully set up Jolene as Mr. Tucker would know exactly which cases would result into a big payout. Also, Bonnie presented evidence that the two had an overseas bank account. Because of this, the judge released Jolene. Later, in the parking lot, after Asher congratulated Bonnie, she kissed him, and the two slept together. However, they didn’t know that Frank could see all of this from his rearview mirror.

That night, at a bar, Oliver finally met Laurel, Michaela and Wes. However, Wes slipped away in order to lie to Rebecca that he was at the library. He then confessed to Laurel, who had followed him, that he was currently doubting if he had done the right thing, because Rebecca had lied to her about Rudy. It turned out that the night he was taken away was also the same night Lila Stangard was murdered.

At the Keating house, Annelise’s mother told her that she was leaving the next day, and while she brushed her hair, informed her daughter that she had known what Uncle Clyde had done to her, and because of that, several nights afterwards, she had deliberately caused the house to burn down with Clyde in it. After this, the two cried and hugged each other.

Meanwhile, Connor brought a drunk Oliver home, who told him that he loved him.

The next day, at Nate’s arraignment, Michaela was surprised to see that Annelise came. Afterwards, she confronted Nate for the benefit of the camera, and thanked him for killing Sam. While this happened, she slipped Nate a note which told him to fire his current lawyer, and gave him a number for another one.

Meanwhile, Laurel, posing as Rudy’s concerned sister, and Wes, posing as Laurel’s husband, went to Enfield Behavioral Hospital. There, after showing him Rebecca’s picture, he just said one word –wet, which Wes felt that he was referring to the water tank that Lila’s body had been found in.

Meanwhile, at her apartment, Rebecca used a phone finder application to find out where Wes, and was taken aback to discover that he was at Enfield.
