According to the press release posted on Spoiler TV, the pilot episode will be setting up the premise for the entire series or season.
Annelise Keating (Viola Davies) is a tough and difficult criminal law professor who teaches a course that she fondly calls “How to Get Away With Murder.” In her class, she gives them her firm’s most difficult cases and lets them compete against each other in a bid to get a chance to work for her firm, as she only selects the best students in her class.
In the end, she picks a handful of promising law students including Wes Gibbins (Alfie Enoch), Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee), Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) and Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza). However, they have no idea what they have just signed up for, as working for Annelise comes with a price, especially as she might be keeping more than just her client’s secrets. Moreover, the four instantly discover that they might be in over their heads, as a flash forward shows that they will be caught up in a murder mystery cover up. Now, they must decide on what to do and to figure out if working with Annelise is worth the price.
Annelise is shown giving her students some tips on how to win a case and get away scratch-free. Some of these steps involve introducing a new suspect and burying the evidence. It is also important to throw as much information as possible to the jury who would then become overwhelmed. The goal is to make the jury have one thing on their minds — doubt. She then tells them to be at the courthouse at 9:00 a.m. the next day. However, Michaela Pratt reminds her that they have other classes to attend. To this, Annelise tells her to show up at 9:00 a.m. or drop out of the competition.
