“Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” Season 1 Episode 10 “Rule #3: Don’t Stand in the Doorway” aired on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. on Bravo. Abby’s HuffPost piece has been published and she gains an exciting new offer, as a result. But it comes with some repercussions, which makes Abby second-guess herself. Find out what happened in the recap below.
There’s a minor earthquake in the city, which sends Jo (Alana Ubach) in a state of panic. She runs in the backyard naked while calling 911, but Abby (Lisa Edelstein) assures her that it’s normal. It’s one of those things that Jo and her daughter have to get used to, now that they’ve decided to live in California from New York. Jo is working on getting a divorce from her husband.
Abby and Jo are at the kids’ school as Jo’s daughter Zoey has chosen to attend there. While Zoey is having her interview, Abby brings Jo to the fundraising committee to meet the other parents who have influences when it comes to admissions of students. Besides, Zoey is a very smart kid. They’d be crazy, not to let her in.
Phoebe (Beau Garrett) emerges from the school lobby after bringing her kids and she looks totally different. She’s on her way make a business proposition with Marco, the owner of Homegrown Organic farm, whom she met in the last episode (“Rule #32: F- you, Rob Frumpkis!” air date Jan. 27, 2015). She’s hoping he’ll see just how valuable she is as Business Barbie.
At the lounge, the moms wonder which of their husbands Abby wrote about in her Huffington Post piece. “Why Aren’t You Divorced Yet?” was just published on the online site and it’s currently trending. They bully her into revealing the information. What if it’s one of their husbands? But Abby maintains the secret, swearing by journalistic ethics. When the moms wouldn’t leave her alone, Jo stands up for her friend and lashes out at them the best way Jo does it — by swearing. Embarrassed, Abby and Jo leave the room, and the latter realizes she may have just blown Zoey’s chances for enrolling at the center.
Well, she actually did because after Zoey’s interview, the directress sadly tells her that while she’s impressed by the young girl. Unfortunately, the school isn’t actually accepting transferees in the middle of the school year. Jo apologizes to her daughter, but the directress tells them they can try again at the beginning of next school year.
Meanwhile, Abby receives a call to meet with a representative from Huffington Post in person. Over brunch, Amanda tells her that Ariana Huffington actually loves her piece. Now, they want her to become the editor-at-large of the new section the site is creating: HuffPost Divorce.
Abby is given time to think about her decision and she’s really glad for the opportunity. She may take the offer. However, when she reaches home, she finds Jake (Paul Adelstein) and Lily (Conner Dwelly) in a serious conversation. Apparently, Lily’s name is part of a slut list that came out in school and Jake blames Abby’s HuffPost piece for why their daughter is being bullied. Abby begins to reconsider the offer to work at the online site. What if this will only cause more hurt for Lily? Jo doesn’t believe this to be the case. Lily is not a slut and neither is Abby.
The school tells Abby and Jake that they can meet the young girl responsible for coming up with the slut list along with her parents. But it turns out, the parents are Nate and his wife. If you recall, Nate was the guy Abby had an emotional affair with, while married to Jake. When they separated, Nate and Abby consummated their affair physical (in the episode “Rule #426: Fantasy Land is a Great Place to Visit” air date Dec. 23, 2014). It was an utter failure.
The tension and awkwardness are not amiss during the meeting. Worse, Abby learns that Nate’s wife had known about their physical affair as well. This news, however, comes as a total surprise to Jake, who now really believes Abby is solely to be blamed for Lily’s shame. He’s thinking that Abby has been sleeping around since the separation. But Abby shoots back at Jake — what does he care, anyway? Abby can do whatever she pleases since they’re planning to divorce.
Meanwhile, Delia almost got back together with Mr. Beech, but at the last minute she decides she’s not ready to commit to him.
Phoebe’s meeting with Marco from Homegrown and Coca-Cola supposedly turned well. However, she thinks she blew it when she tried kissing Marco on the lips. She arrives at Abby’s house, where the girls already are, and learns that Jo’s soon-to-be-ex-husband has another wife and a stable of horses in Montana. Delia discovered this for her as she’s working on dissolving her assets and liabilities. Phoebe declares that Jo wins the pity party that night, which is culminated by an earthquake.
This time, it’s stronger and glasses and things come crashing down on the floor. The lights went out too, and Jo hurt her foot as she stepped on broken glasses. The ladies attend to her for first aid while Delia is left in the living room to watch over Charlie, Abby’s young boy. They’re cozying up in a makeshift tent in the living room, when Jake arrives bearing a bag of flashlights. He wants to check if his family is okay. The lights return soon after.
That night as they retire to bed, Lily tells her mom that she actually placed her name on the slut list, thinking this will get boys to notice her. Abby gives her daughter insights and advices regarding self-worth. Here’s hoping Lily does take her mother’s words to heart.
Before sleeping, Abby finally takes a stab at reading Will’s manuscript, and much to her surprise, the guy is actually a talented writer. The next morning, she goes to his apartment to apologize for how she left things with them the last time. She also tells Will that what he wrote is very good. They make out and the door closes behind them.
"What is going on with you?" "Um, my husband has a second family." #GG2D
