Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” Season 1 Episode 2 “Rule No. 174: Never Trust Anyone Who Charges By the Hour” aired on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. on Bravo. Abby thought that having a cordial divorce was the way to go, but the reality of the situation would have her thinking differently. Find out what happened on this episode in the recap below.

Abby’s (Lisa Edelstein) breakdown made it on national television, Thus, it made her become a trending topic on social media overnight. She’s appalled by comments she read online. But she had to keep the focus on having a “good divorce,” if there was such a thing, for the sake of the kids. They could still grow up being well-adjusted individuals.

One of her girlfriends, Lyla (Janeane Garofalo), advised her to put her phone down and not let the news bother her. So Abby sucked it up and went about her day as usual. She was set to meet with a young new editor, Melissa, who discussed her “situation” with her. The book tour was canceled. Would Abby consider going to rehab? She was getting uncomfortable with this meeting. Melissa suggested she lay low for a while and see how sales of her book would go.

Later, Abby was with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Jake (Paul Adelstein). They were apartment hunting as one of them was moving out. When they couldn’t agree on the place, issues once again reared its ugly head. But Abby was determined to keep their strained relationship as positive as it can.

Suddenly, she got a message on her cell phone from Nate, the guy she had an emotional affair with years ago. Nate told her he missed her. She told the girls at a get together later on that she had no plans with Nate yet, and their discussion turned to her husband. Where was he? He’s probably with his young, hot TV star girlfriend…and she was fine with that?

Abby: We are trying to be on the same team for the kids.

So, Jake was actually in bed with his girlfriend, Becca (Julianna Guill). She really was young and hot. They talked about his divorce, and the fact that he needed to make money now. As a director, he was getting nowhere with projects. Becca, however, assured him that taking care of the kids for the last ten years while his wife had the career was already an accomplishment. She suggested meeting with her executive producer. Maybe Jake could direct an episode of her show. She also offered to have Jake stay in one of her properties, so that he wouldn’t have to go apartment hunting.

Back at Abby’s house, the girls were talking about Gwyneth Paltrow, who saw Abby’s breakdown on Youtube. She apparently related to her experience, but Abby thought she had the “perfect divorce.”

Lyla: But everybody knows splitting up is hell.

Lyla also advised that Abby should lawyer up already, so Phoebe (Beau Garrett) suggested her divorce lawyer Delia. But Lyla was against this, as she knew how Delia worked. Lyla, by the way, was still in the middle of a messy divorce with her ex, Dan. When she got him arrested for DUI last week, he stole her car in retaliation. Then, later sent her photos showing her car parked at a handicap spot. Lyla got a parking ticket for that. She also saw that her car was painted on with a “Bitch on Wheels” graffiti.

To fight back, Lyla met with her ex’s dominatrix and offered to fund her stationery business. As a result,  she broke up with Dan. She also cut off her ex’s credit cards, as the accounts were in her name. Because of this, Dan threatened to sue for full custody of the kids. Oh, this divorce was really getting ugly!

Meanwhile, Jake was with Abby’s brother Max (Patrick Heusinger) at Charlie’s Little Leagues game. He offered him a job at his landscaping company. Max assured him, however, that knowing Abby, she was not going to cut him off money-wise. Jake, however, doubted that. Later, Max was running with his sister in the park. It was obvious that Max was still hopeful Abby and Jake would work it out.

That night, Phoebe took Abby to a restaurant to meet with Delia (Necar Zadegan), the lawyer. She told her that she was getting into mediation with Jake, but Delia said she may as well burn her money as this process was a complete waste.

Delia: Why? Because they prey on the idea of a “good divorce.” There is no such thing. You don’t want someone to fight for compromise. You want someone to fight for you.

Delia also told her that her marriage with Jake wasn’t natural, as she earned more than him. If he was comfortable transitioning because Abby remained accommodating, he would be comfortable taking everything he could get from her. Abby had to be smart about this.

Next day, Nate (C. Thomas Howell) showed up at Abby’s kids’ school. He only wanted to know how she was. But, unfortunately, Jake saw them together, which made her feel guilty.

Back at home, her housekeeper, Rosa, wanted to know if she will be out of a job because of the breakup. She was sad for Abby and Jake. Abby assured her they were still a family, albeit a different one. Next, she went up to her daughter’s room to find her listening to music. Abby noticed a poster of Becca hanging on the wall. For now, her daughter had no idea she’s her dad’s girlfriend.

It was time for the mediation. They were in the midst of setting the terms of their divorce, but things got heated, so Jake left. But then, since Jake still lived with Abby, they were bound to see each other again. She took this opportunity to talk to him about that incident with Nate earlier. But Jake didn’t want to hear it as it was no longer his business. Abby only wanted to be upfront because she wanted a smooth mediation. She even offered to sleep on the couch this time, so Jake could take the bed.

The girls were at a baby shower, when in came Jake’s girlfriend. Abby had to excuse herself. But Becca ran into her, and she was nice enough to thank Abby for making things easy for Jake in the divorce. She also mentioned how Jake was going to live in one of her properties. This surprised Abby, because Jake has never mentioned this. Weren’t they supposed to have a positive divorce?

When she saw Jake later, she told him to move out immediately. They fought about money, about Becca, about Nate, and the mediation. And then she told him she will be hiring a lawyer. Yes, this divorce was not going to be pretty. What was Abby thinking?

That night, however, Abby, Jake, and the kids did shevat for the first time in a long time, as part of their mediation deal. It was sad and sweet to watch at the same time.
