‘The Good Dinosaur’ Review: Breathtaking Imagery Not Enough To Make Up For A Predictable Storyline
The Good Dinosaur

Pixar’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ based on the much-talked-about idea – What if the meteor had missed the earth? – knocks all eyes out with breathtaking visuals, but the story lacks suspense and drama to engage the audience. In the end, the photorealistic animation steals the show, but fails to make up for a linear, predictable script. (Indian Express)

If the meteor had missed the earth, the world would have been a different place where human beings and dinosaurs would coexist. Based on that idea, the story revolves around the friendship of a little caveboy, Spot (Jack Bright) and a baby Apatosauras, Runt Arlo (Raymond Ochoa). Arlo is a little, scared boy. One day, Arlo’s father Henry (Jeffrey Wright) takes him for a night walk, but unfortunately loses his life in a sudden, massive, rapid flood. However, Henry manages to save Arlo before he is flushed away. In the next day, Arlo finds himself in an unknown place far from his house, where he meets the caveboy Spot. Gradually, Spot and Arlo become friends; and Spot helps Arlo to find his way back home. Arlo finally returns to his mom Ida (Frances McDormand) and two brothers: Libby (Maleah Padilla), Buck (Marcus Scribner.)

What makes ‘The Good Dinosaur’ a must-watch movie is its unique visual style that seamlessly blends with brilliantly created animated characters with breathtaking background visuals of flooded forests, soaring mountains, etc. No one would be able to detect which of the visuals are animated. Some of the scenes rouse a lot of suspense and drama, but eventually the film as a whole fails to meet the expectation, due to the lack of a compelling storyline.

Overall, ‘The Good Dinosaur’ is a good movie to watch, especially for its excellent works of animation. You would love the cute relationship between Spot and Arlo, who cannot communicate with language. Director, Peter Sohn’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ may not be outstanding, but it is a good and entertaining movie to watch. (NZ Herald)
