“Gracepoint” Season 1 Episode 3 aired on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on FOX. The police continued their investigation with Mark Solano, the victim’s father, and more secrets were revealed. Read on to find out what happened in this episode.
After learning that Mark’s (Michael Pena) prints were on the site where Danny’s blood was present, the police brought him in for questioning. With his demeanor in front of the police, evading questions and generally feeling uncomfortable, it was easy to assume he was guilty. Curiously, Mark also sent a text message to Vince (Stephen Louis Grush), his apprentice, before his interrogation. His text message read: “I need help. I was with you Thursday night.” At the police, he confessed that he was with Vince till 1:00 a.m. at the bar having drinks.
When Emmett Carver (David Tennant) asked Vince about this, he had the story all checked out, but Ellie Carver (Anna Gunn) also asked Vince’s mom separately, and that’s when the lie fell apart.
Ellie: Anything you just told Detective Carver you’d lie to revisit?
Vince: No, I don’t think so.
Ellie: Coz your mom said you were here with her Thursday night. Not with Mark. She says that you went out to get cough medicines for her around ten.
Vince: Mom’s got dementia, you know that?
Ellie: Uh-huh. She seems pretty clear on this one.
Because Mark’s alibi did not check out, the police continued to hold him at the station. Why was his prints at the site? He said he worked there to fix a leak. Only, the caretaker of the building, Susan Wright aka Sue (Jackie Weaver), told the police later that there was never any leak. The place didn’t have any busted pipes that needed fixing.
To make matters worse, Mark said that he does own a boat. This was a big piece of clue for the detectives as they have earlier surmised that the killer used a boat to transport Danny’s body to the beach to cover its tracks. Besides, the psychic told them (in Episode 2 air date: Oct. 9, 2014) that Danny spoke to him about boats and water in connection to his death. So, when the police checked out Mark’s boat, they found blood, and yes it was Danny’s. Mark, however, insisted that this was blood from one of their boating trips, when Danny cut his toe.
Tom (Jack Irvine), Ellie’s son and Danny’s best friend, was also brought in to the station shed light on how he knew that Danny feared his father so much. He’s hurt Danny once before, and Tom was sure that this wasn’t a one-time thing.
The evidence was piling up. Mark was looking like the closest suspect. When his family wondered why he was being held for hours-long at the police station, that’s when Beth (Virginia Krull) talked to their daughter Chloe (Madalyn Horcher) in confidence. It was gonna be the two of them from now on, and if they have to talk with her father around, they would have to “lock down” if necessary.
Beth had her suspicions, too. She was growing paranoid. While wandering off earlier that day, Raymond (Adam Greydon Reid), the psychic who approached the police, was following her like stalker. When he finally caught up to her, he revealed that he had a message from Danny. But not wanting to believe him, Beth shooed him off and she told Pastor Paul (Kenny Rankin) about this. The pastor was also suspicious of Raymond’s intention. But curiosity got the better of Beth, so she finally agreed to meet with Raymond and hear Danny’s message.
Raymond: Danny wants you to know that he’s okay. He’s not in pain. He says he was on a boat. He says don’t look for who killed him because he knew this person well, and he doesn’t want you to be upset.
Was Raymond telling the truth or was this just a ploy to steer the investigation away. If so, who was Raymond protecting?
Wanting to help her father, Chloe also sent a text message to someone who would be able to shed light on where her father was the night Danny was murdered. That someone was Gemma Fisher (Sarah-Jane Potts), the innkeeper. She arrived at the police to reveal that Mark was with him that night. They were having sex. Gemma was Mark’s mistress, and apparently, Chloe knew about this.
When Mark came home after the police let him go, Beth asked if there was something he would like to confess to her. She probed, but Mark wouldn’t say more. When he couldn’t sleep, he left the house to go to the inn and see Gemma. But Beth followed him, and there she saw that Mark and Gemma kissed.
Back at the Gracepoint police, Ellie was disappointed with learning Mark’s indiscretion. She thought she knew the Solanos well. Carver was pissed that they had wasted two days with Mark, when he’s only protecting himself from a scandal in their marriage. Are they back to square one? Not quite so. The CSI has new evidence. They found a piece of paper with a phone number on it inside Danny’s clothes. Whose was this and will it have any connection to the case?
