“Gracepoint” Season 1 Episode 6 aired on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on FOX. Emotions ran high in this episode as mob rule lead to grave consequences, and Beth confronted her husband’s mistress. Read on to know what happened in this week’s episode.
The show opened with the police reenacting the events before Danny died. They had Tom on a skateboard, taking the route Danny took before he disappeared in order to set the timeline for it. Detectives Emmett Carver (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn) also discussed Danny’s mobile phone, which they Jack Reinhold (Nick Nolte) found in the last episode. It was an old model, and Ellie was sure Danny had a smartphone because her son, Tom, always talked about it. Was this really Danny’s phone?
Renee (Jessica Lucas) and Owen (Kevin Zegers) were working on an article about Jack’s past as a pedophile. The next morning, this piece was published on a national newspaper. Owen, however, was surprised to see that while their shared byline was on print, the story was not what they’ve written. Someone heavily edited the piece to put in a new slant that insinuated Jack admitted to his past wrongdoing.
Owen’s editor at the local Gracepoint Journal was disappointed he wrote a sensationalized story. He tried to reason that their piece was tampered with, but Kathy (Alisen Down) would not hear of it.
Danny’s sister, Chloe (Madalyn Horcher), met with Renee and Owen too, along with Dean (Kendrick Sampson), her boyfriend, who said that while he was still part of the Wildlife Club, he was inappropriately touched by Jack. Renee wanted to write this story, but Owen refused to be part of it now, seeing as how the first shared article they did was messed up.
Reporters hounded Jack, and even the townsfolk were slowly growing angry at him. Some have initiated a campaign to have Jack leave the Wildlife Club, but there were also others, like Pastor Paul (Kevin Rankin) and Ellie’s wife Joe (Josh Miller), who would like to protect him, as he was a good member of the church.
Ellie and Carver went to Jack’s place, and he explained to them that, yes, he had a relationship with a 16-year-old student while he was working as a piano teacher. It was a mutual attraction, but her father reported this to the police.
Jack: They wanted to make an example out of me. So, I served two years in my time. I was lucky to get out alive.
He also told Carver that this was not anybody’s business, which is why he didn’t have to tell the police about it.
Ellie: Did you ever see that girl again?
Jack: I married her. She was 18. I was 40.
Meanwhile, Beth (Virginia Krull) finally confessed to her husband that she was pregnant again, and Mark (Michael Pena) told her they should keep the baby. He also said he did not want to lose Beth. Later, Beth passed by the hotel Gemma (Sarah-Jane Potts) managed and started throwing glasses to the floor. Beth warned her that she would do much worse, unless Gemma stayed away from her family.
The forensics had an update on the crime scene. They found three used cigarettes near Danny’s body. So whoever was the killer also probably smoked. Carver said that he could have an accomplice. Meanwhile, Owen realized that his father’s boat was actually missing and told his cousin Ellie that it was probably the same boat that the suspect burned. The forensics confirmed that it was one and the same.
Vince (Stephen Louis Grush), Mark’s apprentice, led the mob to Jack’s house. Something violent was about to happen, but it was a good thing Mark rushed to the scene to pacify it. Jack told Mark that the only reason he was close to the boys at the Wildlife Club was because they reminded him of his young son, who died too soon. Apparently, this death was the cause of the decay of his marriage to his young wife. Mark was sympathetic, but he advised Jack to leave Gracepoint, if he can.
Early in the morning, Jack saw that his house was vandalized with the word “pedophile” spray-painted on his property. He also saw that the newspaper had a new story about him with a photo of his ex-wife and dead son on it. Unable to bear it all, Jack clutched a photo of his family and walked towards the ocean where he drowned himself.
Feeling overwhelmed by this latest tragedy, Ellie was beginning to worry that they may not be able to solve this case. They had lots of clues: the hiker Lars Pierson, Danny’s cell phone, the boat, and now, the newest info with the cigarette butts. But so far, all of these pointed to nothing. Carver assured her that they will close this case, even though Carver wasn’t actually able to solve the last case he handled in Rosemont. He insisted that the investigation had an error in that one, which he was confident won’t happen with Danny’s.
