“Gracepoint” Season 1 Episode 8 aired on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on FOX. Thankfully, Tom has been found. He's hurt but otherwise unharmed. But the police still have nothing on Danny’s case, even as the Solanos attempted to restore life back to normal. Read on to find out what happened in this episode recap.
Very early on, Tom (Jack Irvine) was already found. He emerged from the woods seemingly injured and a bit frightened. It was the pastor, Paul Coates (Kevin Rankin), who saw him. At the hospital, Tom confessed to his mother and Detective Carver (David Tennant) that when he learned Lars Pierson (Brendan Fletcher) was back, he thought he would follow up on him. The kid did his own sleuthing after he overheard his mother talking about the suspect one time. He snooped among her belongings and saw Pierson’s file, so he thought he knew where to go. But he got lost and hurt himself in the woods. He’s never spoken nor met Pierson at all.
Carver: What were you planning to do when you found him?
Tom confessed that he only wanted to show the person that might have killed his best friend the crossword puzzle Danny had. His best friend loved crossword puzzles, and he thought it would make the killer feel bad, enough for the killer to tell the truth. There were such innocence and naiveté in his reasons, but it pointed a glaring truth.
Tom: I just want to help solve the case. For Danny. Also I…wanted my mom home back.
This case was clearly affecting the young boy, with his best friend dead and his mother immersed in trying to find his killer. However, Tom was still hiding something. He asked about how files were permanently deleted on the computer from his Uncle Owen, and Paul saw him trying to destroy his laptop apart. What was this kid hiding?
Speaking of Paul, it was Mark Solano (Michael Pena) who suggested to Carver to dig into his background further. Did they know he has been going to Narcotics Anonymous? Did he know that the pastor has remained in love with his wife and that he hates that he’s with Beth (Virginia Krull)?
Carver and Ellie (Anna Gunn) went to ask Paul about Narcotics Anonymous. He said he was already three years sober after using painkillers and alcohol to get relief from his bad back. When Carver pointed out that he did not have a solid alibi for the night Danny died, he said he had no cause to kill the boy. He was willing to give a DNA sample. He came by the police station where Carver further interrogated him.
Paul Coates: You can accuse me. You can take DNA samples. You can ridicule me about my past. But you can’t belittle my faith just because you’re too shutdown to comprehend it. People need hope right now, and they are certainly not getting it from you.
Meanwhile, the Solanos focused on going back to school and to work. Beth came across Renee who helped her get in touch with the mother of the victim of the Rosemont murder. It is the previous case Carver worked on before going to Gracepoint. She didn’t have anything good to say about Carver. She was still suffering from depression over the death of her daughter. Did Beth want to be like her?
Chloe (Madalyn Horcher) had a hard time coping in school. Mark saw old newspapers with Danny’s stories lying around this house he's been servicing. Chloe, meanwhile, had to get away from school with the help of Dean (Kendrick Sampson), just as Mark was also about to pick her up. He followed them and called up his wife. They found Chloe and Dean hanging out; she was dancing to music. Dean said it was his way of letting Chloe forget about the tragedy.
Chloe: I need a break from being the dead kid’s sister.
Not wanting to be like that family from Rosemont, the Solanos decided to go bowling. It was the most fun activity they’ve done since losing Danny. It was nice to see some sort of healing. After the game, Beth decided she will be keeping the baby. Moving on for the Solanos looked promising, even as the police have yet to close Danny’s case. Pierson was actually released, by the way, as they didn’t have anything to hold him.
And then there was Susan Wright (Jackie Weaver). She went to the Miller’s house to give Tom Danny’s missing skateboard, just as Kathy Eaton, the editor of Gracepoint Journal, had done an extensive research into her background to give to the police. They arrested her, but she said she would not talk unless she’s certain her dog is safe. Vince (Stephen Louis Grush), the guy she’s at odds with, took her dog.
But with Susan not yet providing any plausible leads, Ellie and Carver were back at the shack to investigate the place further. Suddenly, a figure emerged but ran upon seeing the police. They chased after this but was slowed down by Carver, who suffered from another attack and dropped to the ground.
