“Gracepoint” Season 1 Episode 9 aired on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on FOX. The show is down to its final two episodes, and in the latest story, Detective Carver has been given 24 hours to solve the case, as he has already been taking off it. Find out what happened in the recap below.
After his collapse, Carver (David Tennant) was sent to the hospital with Ellie (Anna Gunn). He insisted that he has to be back at work as he cannot let the Solanos down. He has to solve Danny’s murder. Ellie called him out, telling him he is unfit for duty. She briefed the rest of the staff about Carver’s condition, as well as the status of their investigation, while still having Susan Wright (Jacki Weaver) held for interrogation. Carver, however, was able to check himself out of the hospital and was soon barking orders at his staff, including Miller. But the chief told Carver that he was being transferred the next day, so he has to tie up loose ends.
Ellie was then back at the interrogation room with Susan, who still didn’t want to talk without knowing the status of her dog. But Ellie was able to draw her out. She admitted that it was her cigarettes the police found next to Danny’s body, and yes, she took his skateboard.
Susan: I stood there for a while, looking at him, he was beautiful.
In Ellie’s deduction, Susan was not Danny’s killer, but she was hiding something, so Carver instructed her to draw Susan out some more. In doing so, she revealed some glaring truths about her past.
She used to have two wonderful daughters, but one of them was being sexually molested by her husband, and when the youngest was soon the target of the molestation, her eldest daughter protected her and got herself killed in the process. Her husband was convicted, and later, he hanged himself inside the prison. Her youngest daughter was taken away as the state believed she was not fit to become a parent. She didn’t know this whole time that this was happening in her house.
Susan also revealed that she saw how Danny’s body was brought to the shore on a boat by a man she believed to be Vince (Stephen Louis Grush), Mark’s apprentice, whom she said was her son, whom the state also took away from her. Based on this, the police took Vince in for questioning, and Carver was the one leading the interrogation.
Vince denied Susan was his mother. He had no knowledge he was adopted by the mother he has always known, and that Susan was a crazy liar. She took Danny’s skateboard because she knew Vince was the one who made it, and maybe he would like it back. Vince was particularly close to Danny too. They went on hunting trips together, sometimes without Mark (Michael Pena) and Beth (Virgina Kull) knowing about it. He had the boy’s name tattooed on his arm after his death.
Susan wanted the police to catch Vince as she believed he would end up just like her husband, if no one would straighten him out. To make matters worse for Vince, Ellie’s sister also spotted someone the night Danny was murdered. He was carrying what looked like a body wrapped and rolled up on Mark’s van.
Carver: Vince is our prime suspect. He had a weapon, a family history of violence. He was seen with the body.
Vince was locked up in jail because of all the evidence against him, despite his insistence that he would never kill a friend’s son. Chloe’s boyfriend also attested that Vince and Danny were close, almost like brothers, so he could not possibly do this to him.
While this was not a closed case, the police was getting somewhere. Susan was allowed some time to see Vince, but he threatened her that he will be coming for her when the police found out the truth, and he’s released. Before she left the station, she had one last talk with Ellie.
Ellie: Back then, in your own house, how could you not know? Your husband, your child?
Later, Susan was seen packing up her stuff, ready to leave town.
Meanwhile, the Gracepoint Journal wanted to do a story on Carver. His collapse and his possible transfer was a huge story. With some hesitation, Carver agreed to an exclusive anyway, and there he revealed the truth about what happened to his previous case in Rosemont.
Apparently, he wasn’t the one responsible for botching it up. It was his ex-wife who lost the evidence, and he took the fall for her because he didn’t want the truth to come out to protect his daughter. His ex-wife, who was also a cop, was having an affair, and she was fooling around while on duty.
Beth and Mark, meanwhile, had some stuff going on as well. They were set to have their first ultrasound, which had Beth wondering if having the baby was right, when they still have some problems in their marriage. She wanted to raise the baby in a happy environment. That moment in the bowling alley was not going to instantly fix things between her and Mark. So she sought Pastor Paul’s (Kevin Rankin) advice, which irked her husband. Would Mark be willing to seek out a therapist with her?
Pastor Paul had another information to bring to the police, when he saw how Tom (Jack Irvine) had tried to destroy his computer. Tom actually threatened the pastor that he would tell the police he hit Danny once if he blabbed about his laptop, but the pastor sensed that something was not right. Did Ellie know that Danny and Tom were no longer in good terms before the latter died?
And that’s what happened on “Gracepoint” Season 1 Episode 9, which aired Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on FOX. The show is nearing its end. Next week, the killer will finally be revealed. Do you have your guesses? In the meantime, check out the highlight of this episode in the video below.
