After months of teasing, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now screening in theaters worldwide and is about to open in the U.S. this week. The movie introduces Mantis, a new member of Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) band of misfits. In a new interview, Pom Klementieff talks about how her new character’s relationship with the two-time galaxy savers and her role in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Warning: Contains Spoilers for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (obviously).
Just Two People Trying To Figure Out Metaphors
The new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 expanded Marvel’s cosmic cinematic universe by introducing a slew of new characters like the artificially-created human Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), the leader of the Ravagers Stakar (Sylvester Stallone), the celestial being Ego (Kurt Russell).
And while the anticipated sequel is still about the adventures of Star-Lord, Gamora (Zeo Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), the team has welcomed new members including Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Mantis.
While completely inept of social skills, fans who have seen the movie last weekend are witnesses to the incredible chemistry between Klementieff’s Mantis and Bautista’s Drax. The two struck an unlikely friendship, but is there a chance that romance will bloom between the two?
Klementieff does not think so. In an interview with Screenrant, the 30-year-old revealed that while she definitely “ships” the pairing of Mantis and Drax, she thinks their relationship will remain platonic.
“It’s super cute and I think that James is so good at that because he really created a friendship between a man and a woman and it’s not, they are not going to have sex,” the actress stated. “They are not going to fall in love. It’s much more interesting in staying platonic and cute, so I like it cause it’s a bigger brother and a sister.”
The spark between Drax and Mantis was apparent since their first meeting, but the former insisted that he does not find her attractive. Eventually, however, the cosmic hero saw that she is indeed beautiful. Albeit on the inside.
Mantis in Avengers: Infinity War
A romance still has a chance to blossom because the two will reunite in Avengers: Infinity War. But now that she no longer is under the control of Ego, where will the universe take Mantis?
She will still travel with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Without going into details, Klementieff assured that after growing up as an orphan, the wide-eyed empath has finally found her place in the galaxy.
“She has a family now, so she’s kind of, she’ll see,” the actress said. “She’ll go with the flow.”
Dave Bautista on Drax the Destroyer
However, Drax might have not the time for romance. The character is still on the path to avenge his family by killing Thanos.
But while the character is tough, Bautista thinks that Drax is an underdog. The 48-year-old explained that the hero has his heart in the right place, but “he just always seems to get his a** handed to him,” he told Uproxx.
To recall, in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Drax was defeated when he first confronted Thanos’ henchman Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). The Kree warrior was eventually defeated when the Star-Lord and the Guardians used the Space Stone to take the villain down and save Xandar.
MCU’s Drax could still take a darker path like his comic book counterpart. Bautista mentioned that a producer once told him that his character will eventually be closer to the Destroyer of Marvel comics in the next movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now screening in theaters worldwide. Meanwhile, catch Mantis and Drax the Destroyer next on Avengers: Infinity War.
