Adam Warlock was almost in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Ahead of the anticipated worldwide release, director James Gunn talked about the popular comic book hero’s place in the MCU and why it is not yet time for his appearance.
The Silent Guardian
Marvel comic fans are well aware that Adam Warlock is an important part of the comic-verse, especially in the story of Thanos and the Infinity Stones. As a member of the Infinity Watch, the artificially-created human was tasked to protect the powerful artifacts.
In the MCU, “Him” still has not been introduced and, so far, there has not been any word regarding his appearance in any of the upcoming movies. Apparently, he was supposed to come across Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This information was revealed by the movie’s director in an interview with Slash Film.
“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters,” Gunn told the site. “In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…”
However, the sequel will introduce a slew of new characters in addition to the Guardians which now comprises of eight members including Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). He felt that there were already way too many characters that is why he had to cut Warlock from the movie.
“He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many,” he explained. He, however, loved the character’s depiction in the original movie. “I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock,” he added.
But he was faced with a difficult choice: he had to cut Mantis (Pom Klementieff) if he wants to bring Warlock to the MCU. In the end, he chose to keep Mantis because she is a more “organically part of the movie anyway.”
Adam Warlock in Future MCU Movies
Fans of the character should not lose hope. Gunn commented that he has saved Him for later use. With news that the filmmaker will stay and helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it might be possible that Warlock will eventually turn up in the MCU.
Gunn also commented that the third movie is going to end the original team. Could Warlock, who was also a Guardian in the comics, replace Pratt’s Peter Quill?
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige added that Warlock will be an important figure in the next phase of the MCU. While he will not appear in Avengers: Infinity War, the company will place a better focus on the cosmic universe and the character will be a huge part of the story.
Guardians of the Galaxy Trilogy
Speaking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn also revealed that the third movie is going to be conclusive. He told EW (via Nerdist) that the second installment will allow the audience to get to know each character before they have to say goodbye to the original team.
He stated that the three movies will tell “one story” about the current iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He also assured that he would not have agreed to do a third movie if he still has no idea where he wants to take the story.
As for the Guardians beyond Vol. 3, Gunn seems to have already started laying the pipes for the next iteration of the galaxy-savers. Sylvester Stallone has been revealed as Stakar of the House of Ogord a.k.a Starhawk. The “One Who Knows” was also a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will open on May 5.
