To all "Pacific Rim" fans out there, here’s a bit of a reveal and specifics for the upcoming sequel “Pacific Rim 2” from none other than the main man himself,  Guillermo del Toro. Read on for further details.

In an article from The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the "Pacific Rim" helmer spills on some specifics on the planned sequel as well as spilling the beans on who might possibly return for the next installment.

“It’s not an immediate follow-up – It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after — what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju is not a threat.  It’s quite a jump,” said the helmer in an interview with Collider.

So does this mean that there will be no Kaijus for the sequel? Apparently not. Del Toro adds in the interview that the Kaijus will somehow be making their way back in the pic, although they will be “very different” from the ones we saw from the original pic.

Moreover, del Toro spills on which characters might return for the sequel.

“I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn [Gorman] and Charlie [Day], – honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau” said del Toro.

“Pacific Rim,” which was set in the 2020s, saw the emerge of the Kaijus, colossal monsters coming from an interplanetary portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity uses gigantic humanoid mechas, known as Jaegers, each controlled by at least two pilots, whose minds are joined by a neural bridge. Having rid of the Kaijus and the portal, the sequel which takes place years after the first pic will see the aftermath of the Kaiju war and fate of the Jaeger technology after the events of the first pic.

The 2013 film “Pacific Rim” received generally positive reviews, with their highly praised visual effects and action sequences. Although performing poorly at the United States box office, the film proved successful in other territories. It earned a worldwide total of more than $411 million, including $114 million in China, where it drew its largest market.

“Pacific Rim 2” is set for a theatrical release on April 7, 2017 to be distributed by Universal Pictures.
