We might be seeing Godzilla duking it out with a Jaeger in “Pacific Rim 3,” if Guillermo Del Toro has his way. The “Pacific Rim” director recently said that he would be happy to see his mechanized armor-suits taking on the King of Monsters. Read on to find out more.
Legendary properties “Godzilla” and “Pacific Rim” are currently under development for sequels under Gareth Edwards and Guillermo Del Toro, respectively. But rumors mill around that the studio is very much interested in combining its franchises into what will be an epic cross-over. In a recent quote to Movie Pilot, Del Toro said,” so far with the sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the f*ck out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain.”
Too much maybe, but a Godzilla vs Jaeger movie helmed by Del Toro will certainly be a spectacle to behold. The directors’ fantastic vision has given us movies as varied as the spine-chilling “The Orphanage” to the over the top vampire-slayer in “Blade II.” And though “Pacific Rim,” Del Toro’s 2013 film about ridiculously large robots battling ridiculously large monsters, did only moderate business in the US, it was a smash-hit in international screens.
The mythology for incorporating Godzilla into a “Pacific Rim” sequel is perfect. It would be the biggest, baddest monster in a world being invaded by Kaiju from outer-space. And at some point in the movie it will go head to head with a Jaeger (although “Pacific Rim’s” mechas will need a serious upgrade if they have to stand in the ring with Godzilla).
Del Toro also pointed out at the interview that “Pacific Rim 2” will explore the tech behind the Kaiju attack, saying, “There was this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea.”
