Previously on “Halt and Catch Fire” (“The Coding of the Soul”), the prototype for the mobile personal computer was now up and running in the office, but Cameron was not completely satisfied with it. She thought that it needed a personality to it to make it even more unique. Cameron wanted to make something that would make people need and want a PC. However, Gordon showed the bit least interest in Cameron’s idea because he thought that doing that would bring in more complications. However, Cameron would not give up on that idea, and she tried to get some inspiration to have a clearer vision on what she should do with the PC.
Cameron tried to get it out of Joe by simply asking where he got his scars on his chest. Joe told her lies, and he called him out for it. She told him that he doesn’t have a soul. And because of this, it worried Cameron that the PC might just be the same as the other PCs on the market.
A storm was coming, and Gordon’s daughters were getting worried that the storm would hit their home. Gordon assured them not to worry and even tried to play the role of father and husband much better this time by telling his wife that she would be the one to get the Cabbage Patch doll their daughters want. However, Gordon remained distracted from work as he continued to butt heads with Cameron over what she planned to do with the PC. This put his managerial skills to the test. Because of the recurring argument about the PC with Cameron, he found it difficult to lead his employees, especially Cameron who was so rebellious.
Despite the storm, Joe still pushed trough with his dinner plans with Gordon and Donna. He went to the couple’s house and met their daughters, whom he warmed up to after a while. They bonded while Gordon was out looking for the Cabbage Patch doll and even found a dead body bin the street, a victim of the storm. He got home, but he missed out on the chance to bond with his daughters, but Joe left the moment Gordon got home to give them some family time.
Joe then went to Cameron’s place, and Cameron showed him the OS she had been working on, which astounded Joe when it asked him to type his name. Then they asked him, “Hello, Joe. What would you like to do?” This brought tears to his eyes and immediately looked at Cameron and told her the truth about the scars on his chest. This made Cameron really happy because finally, after months of being with him, they connected. We also found out how Cameron fell in love with computers.
