“Hawaii Five-0” Season 5 Episode 17 “Kuka’awale (Stakeout)” aired last Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 at 9:00 PM on CBS. In this episode, Detective Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan) and Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett (Alex O’ Loughlin) staked out the apartment of a woman involved in a jewel heist, and in the process, Steve opened up a little to Danny. Meanwhile, Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia) made a new friend in the building they were in. This episode also marks Daniel Dae Kim’s directorial debut. Read on to learn more about this episode.

A man in a mask robbed a jewelry store and went over to his partner, a woman, in their getaway car, who shot him and shoved him out.

Meanwhile, Detective Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan) and Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett (Alex O’ Loughlin) attended a follow up counseling session which showed that they had achieved no progress since their last session, which led their psychologist to schedule another session with them. He further told them that they had to fill up a workbook called the “Perfect Partners Handbook”.

The two went over to the jewelry shop that had been robbed, and where a former police officer named Mike Velasco had died due to gunshot. The shop was owned by Mia Price (Arden Cho),  who told them that diamonds worth three million dollars had been stolen. Officer Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park) then informed them that the wheelman had shot his or her partner, but based on the blood trail, that partner was still alive.

At the Five-0 Task Force Headquarters, Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) identified the partner as Jacob Anders (Zoltan Hayth), while Lou Grover (Chi McBride) identified the wheelman as  Emma Mills (Jessica Lowndes), who was currently staying at her apartment. They then staked her apartment out so that they could get them both when Anders came for her.

Steve and Danny then stayed at the apartment opposite to that of hers, which was owned by a woman named Agnes, who had a cat named Mr. Pickles, much to the annoyance of Danny, who hated cats, and who managed to break a cat figurine. While they waited for Emma to draw back the curtains to reveal that she was now a blonde, Steve fixed the broken figurine. She then called up a man, a fence, whom Danny had identified as Barry Burns (Jon Lovtiz).

Chin Ho and Lou then got him to cooperate with them, and Barry told them that Anders was really Radomir Ivanovich, an ex-Serbian Special Forces operative turned jewel thief. Later on, they discovered a Ziploc bag of weed in a cupboard, which belonged to a drug dealer named Ricky Schiff (Charlie Saxton), who lived in the building, and whom they met while eating dinner. They had ordered Indian take out, and Danny had sulked the entire time as Steve had ended up choosing what they were going to eat, even if he said that Danny could pick the place. They also met Mrs. Ruth Tennenbaum (Cloris Leachman) who gave them cookies, and asked for help regarding her missing fern. The next day, they sent over Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia) to help her look for her missing plant.

After Barry’s meeting with Emma, she called up a woman as she was worried, and the two were surprised to discover that Mia was behind the entire thing, as she had set up the robbery so that she could collect money based on the diamond’s insurance. They were also surprised to discover that the two women were lovers.

Steve, in reply to Danny’s question that morning about his passion for music, told him that he had stopped playing the guitar in the tenth grade after he had gotten stage fright during a talent show. Later that night, Ivanovich robbed a store and armed himself to the teeth.

The next morning, Steve and Danny fought over the fact that Danny had caused Mr. Pickles to disappear as he had left the window open, and called over Ricky to find him. They were then interrupted by screams from the apartment a floor below Emma, and quickly realized that they had been tricked. At Emma’s apartment, they discovered that Emma was dying, and discovered that the diamonds were gone. Steve then sent Kono over to Mia, and there, she managed to knock out Ivanovich, and arrested Mia.

Afterwards, they told Ricky that he would not have to go to jail if he revealed the names of all his suppliers; and Jerry introduced Ruth to the others as he noticed that Ruth was lonely. Afterwards, Danny surprised Steve by gifting him a guitar so that he could play again, and Steve allowed Danny to drive his car to their counselling session.
