HBO to Develop Bruce Kaplan’s Musical Comedy

Fans of musicals need not look any farther from their television screen in order to enjoy a musical theater or musical performance. The musical television show is rapidly evolving as musical television shows are rapidly invading the small screen. Producers and writers are developing musical projects for major television networks, and HBO is no exception. Read on to learn more about this story.

According to Deadline, HBO is currently developing a brand new Bruce Kaplan musical comedy. Bruce Kaplan, a writer and producer, is best known for his work on two of HBO’s original television shows- “Six Feet Under” (2001 to 2005) and “Girls” (2012-2014).

It was reported that the network planned on collaborating again with Kaplan, except this time, it will be a musical comedy.

Kaplan will write and produce  “Sing With Me,” the title of the upcoming TV series. The story will follow “three generations of women who all live in Los Angeles.” So far, there has been no announcement as to who the cast will be.

According to Playbill, HBO is not the only network or channel to get into musical television shows, as there is seemingly is a boom when it comes to that genre. An Alan Menken musical television show will be debuting this coming fall on ABC. The upcoming television show is entitled “Galavant.”

Recently, NBC also announced that they had two musical television shows in development. One will be a historical series entitled “Robin Hood and Maid Marian”. The other is a musical that is currently being developed with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. This other project is entitled “1970s” and will be about the artists and music that influenced an entire decade.

Prior to this, NBC aired a musical series about making a Marilyn Monroe musical. This series, which premiered in 2012, and was cancelled after two seasons, was entitled “Smash”. Also, in Dec. 2013, NBC aired “The Sound of Music LIVE!” starring Carrie Underwood as Maria.
