Hell on Wheels” Season 5 premiere is here and Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) finds himself with a new antagonist. If you missed the Season 5, Episode 1 “Chinatown” premiere, read below for the full recap:

It’s a very rare sight to see Cullen smiling and looking content and that’s what we saw during the opening scene of “Hell on Wheels” Season 5, Episode 1. However, that didn’t last very long when the harsh reality knocked him out when he found out that Naomi and his son were impossible to find because they had been cast out of all Mormon settlements as apostates. It was so ironic because he took this job offered by Central Pacific’s Collis P. Huntington because he thought it’s one way that would lead him back to his wife and son.

Most of the Central Pacific’s employed laborers were Chinese and Cullen took an instant hatred to Chang especially when he found out that the guy took a huge amount of money from someone else’s salary. Huntington doesn’t really care about what’s happening between his employees just as long as they do their jobs. Cullen tried to bring this up and demanded Chang to pay a fair wage to the workers. Of course, he didn’t like the way Cullen handled things.

Cullen found a friend in James Strobridge who at first insulted Cullen but later on, turns out to be a pretty good guy who even brought Cullen home to his family to have dinner. He then later on invited Cullen to have drinks and play some cards until Chang came in and played with them as well, but lost. He didn’t take the loss quite nicely but he made sure not to let that show. Their conversation was interrupted when Chang thought Tao was the one who told about the wage issue to Cullen, so he got his men beat him up. But Cullen had found out about it from Fong, Tao’s young son, so of course Cullen was to the rescue and chased off Chang’s men. Cullen was definitely not making Chang happy.

After that, The Swede knocked on Cullen’s door to tell him that he was going to join the Central Pacific construction. Cullen tried to control himself even amidst the insults The Swede was throwing at him. Revenge can wait.

Doc Durant appeared in this episode to reveal that he has a spy in Huntington’s office feeding him information regarding the progress of the Central Pacific railroad and of course, about Cullen.
