With Tao’s death, Fong is grieving and determined to bring his father’s body back to China. Cullen wouldn’t let her on her own so he accompanied her. They rode the train to the end of the track and rode a wagon going to Sacramento. Along with them is Tao’s body. They camped during the night and one night, Cullen gazes at Fong – seeing something in her. Cullen is starting to see and appreciate the woman in her.

The next day, they crossed the river but the water was too rough so they decided to turn the wagon around. Sadly, the coffin float off and they tried their hardest to get to it. When they got to it, Fong decided to just bury the coffin where it is. That night, she wore her mother’s clothes. She and Cullen did a Chinese ritual sending her father off to his eternal resting place. Then she invited Cullen to sleep in her tent because it’s cold outside.

Meanwhile, the Mormons have left camp. Brigham Young demanded that Durant pays him the $500,000 that he owes. Durant was caught off guard and he said that he can’t pay him on such short notice. Young was adamant to get that money. Durant was nonchalant about the whole thing. He even told one of his partners that he has better things to do with the money instead of pay Young. Since he decided not to pay Durant. he pulled off all the Mormons off the workforce.
